SALEM — The NHIAA ice hockey season is young, but Londonderry High School has probably seen enough of Windham goaltender Roberto Robles.
The Lancers have faced Robles twice this season and have yet to score against him. Robles made 16 saves to help Windham defeat Londonderry 1-0 Saturday night at the Icenter, and was also in net when the Jaguars beat the Lancers 2-0 in the Christmas Jamboree.
“Their goalie has been great,” Londonderry coach Mike Bears said. “Made a lot of big saves for them. If you don’t test him, you’re not going to get by him, so you have to generate more chances. We didn’t generate as many shots as we would have liked (Saturday) even though the zone time was good, so we have to work on that.”
The victory raised Windham’s Division I record to 3-1. The team’s only loss came against unbeaten Concord.
Londonderry, which beat Windham in last year’s Division I championship game, fell to 1-1. The Lancers had eight seniors on last year’s championship team.
“I think I’ve been on the ice since I was 4,” Robles said. “Always wanted to be a goalie. My cousin was a goalie and I remember liking the big pads.
“I’d say my skating and my mobility are my strengths. Those are things I really work on during the offseason.”
Robles, a senior, went 6-1-0 with three shutouts last season, but gave way to Ben Breen when the playoffs began. Robles has allowed nine goals in four Division I games this season.
“This year he’s obviously one of the top goaltenders in the league,” Windham coach Shawn Quaglietta said following Saturday’s game. “In every sport, you try to be strong up the middle, and defense and goaltending is definitely our strong suit.
“He’s very athletic. He’s big and takes up a good portion of the net. He made a couple of saves early where he had to slide across when half the net was open and showed that mobility is his strength.”
Josh Martino scored the game’s lone goal Saturday. It was a knuckler that bounced over the shoulder of Londonderry goalie Justin Doyle (16 saves) with 8:51 remaining in the second period. Cole Carrier collected the only assist.
Robles made sure the goal was the only one Windham needed.
“This game was kind of like the Christmas tourney (against Londonderry),” Robles said. “We started slow in that game, but then put two in the net in the second period. There were some moments where I had to step it up and be there for my team.
“My defense does a great job. They make my job pretty easy. Sometimes it’s my job to help them out and make those big saves.”
