Warwick rallied from a slow start to to defeat Wallkill 35-31 in the Section 9 Class AA girls basketball championship game on March 8 at Monroe-Woodbury High School.
Senior Angelika Quadrino led Warwick with 11 points. She had nine points in the Wildcats’ fourth-quarter comeback. Junior Emily Romig scored 10 points.
“I am incredibly happy for the players,” coach Jim O’Brien said. “They work incredibly hard and represent all the best in our district. Hard work, perseverance, and great team players. They have been a pleasure to work with this season.”
The Wildcats (21-1) advance to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament against Section 4 champion Horseheads (15-5). The game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on March 15 at Kingston High School. The winner will play in the state semifinals at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy on March 22.

Junior Luke Beattie won his fourth consecutive state championship in the pole vault on March 8 at the NYSPHSAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Ocean Breeze Athletic Facility in Staten Island.
Luke cleared 16 feet, six inches, on his first attempt to win the title. He set the state record of 17-7 earlier this season and is ranked No. 2 in the country in the pole vault. Next on the schedule for Luke is the Nike Indoor Nationals at the Armory on March 15. He will compete in the pole vault and in the 800-meter relay.
At the state meet, Warwick’s 800 relay team of Isaiah Gonzalez, Ryan Sullivan, Logan Coley, and Tommy Ronan ran a time of 1:31.64 which was good for seventh place in the large school Division 1 category. 
Senior Rachel Venter won the pole vault at the NYSPHSAA championship meet by clearing 12-6 on her second attempt. She finished second to Warwick teammate Lily Beattie last year.
“Rachel Venter’s years of hard work and dedication to pole vault paid off in a big way when she won the state championship,” her coach Kirk Thomas said. “She has always had the heart of a champion, and now she has the medals to prove it! Rachel will continue her stellar season as she competes at indoor track and field nationals; we look forward to another podium finish there as well.”
Rachel will also be competing in the Nike Indoor Nationals this weekend. Next year she will be vaulting for Division I University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Eighth-grade diver Drew Voloshin finished sixth at the NYSPHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving Championships at Ithaca College. The divers who finished in front of Drew were all either seniors or juniors.
After falling behind by 20 points in the first half, Warwick battled back to cut the lead to three points late in the fourth quarter of a the Section 9 Class AA quarterfinal game against Goshen on March 4. But Goshen was able to hold onto their lead and won the game 55-51. The Wildcats finished the season with a 13-8 record.
