Selena Gomez revealed that she was "grumpy" the day that Benny Blanco proposed to her and almost didn’t show up.
The Only Murders in the Building actress detailed the scene during a guest appearance with her fiancèe on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, revealing that she did not see the proposal coming.
"We had to do a lot of promo for the album. So I woke up, and I was very confused about what was happening and where we were going because it seemed kind of far. So I’m kind of a little grumpy. I really am tired. This is too far. Then I tell him, ‘After this shoot, I’m going to go hang out with my friends,’ and he starts going, ‘Uhh, sure. I’ll see you when you get here.’"
The producer interjected, revealing that his partner’s mood that morning had him "freaking out" about his elaborate plan for the day.
"Of course I’m freaking out. She was mad. She almost didn’t come. She was like, ‘I really don’t feel that well. I think I’m going to stay home today. Can’t we just make up the shoot another day?’"
The standout referred to getting engaged as the "craziest thing in the world."
"It’s like right before you’re going to tell someone you’re going to be married to them forever, they’re like, ‘Show me how good you can lie to me.’ It’s so hard. I tell her everything. So she was just upset with me because the day before, I was making bad lies."
Blanco revealed that he hid the ring in a box and kept it in their house in the days leading up to the proposal, which he remembers as the "scariest week of my life." When it was time to say "yes" to Blanco, the "Calm Down" hitmaker forgot her words.
"I freaked out. I forgot everything."
The star-studded duo is not only in the process of planning their wedding but just released their first joint album, I Said I Loved You First, out today!
