This Saturday, DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium will serve as the setting for a rare college football matchup as the No. 3 Texas Longhorns (9-1) take on the Kentucky Wildcats (4-6).
It’s been more than seven decades since these two teams met, with the last meeting in 1951 seeing Texas narrowly edge Kentucky 7-6. But while that contest is a distant memory, this one promises to carry much more significance for both sides.
For Texas, the game is a crucial step in their pursuit of the College Football Playoff. With a 9-1 record and sitting firmly in the playoff hunt, the Longhorns cannot afford a slip-up. They are heavy 20.5-point favorites, and anything less than a dominant performance would raise questions heading into the postseason.
On the other hand, Kentucky enters the game at 4-6 and struggling in the SEC with a 1-6 conference record. The Wildcats are far from playoff contention, but they still have a chance to play spoiler.
For Kentucky, the game represents a final opportunity to salvage a season that has not gone as planned, and a chance to make a statement against one of the nation’s elite programs.
