Congratulations to Jaden Chavis for winning Lohud’s Player of the Week, for his performances against Somers, Harrison, and John Jay Cross River.
Peekskill’s good run of form ended last week, after losing to Ardsley, 53-49, on Tuesday, Jan. 14. In that game, Jaden Chavis scored 27 points and Isaiah Crawford scored 13.
The Peekskill boys rebounded on Thursday, Jan. 16, picking up a win over Hendrick Hudson, 68-44. Chavis led the Red Devils in points with 29. Trailing him was Crawford with 15 and Darius Smythe with 14.
The Red Devils currently hold an overall record of seven wins and five losses. Their next game is against Edgemont on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at Edgemont High School at 4:30 p.m. The Peekskill boys will also play Sleepy Hollow on Friday, Jan. 24 at home at 7 p.m. Senior Night celebrations will be held prior to this match.
Finally, Peekskill will compete in the 13th annual Coaches vs Cancer Showcase at Mahopac High School this weekend. Their only game will be against Suffern High School on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 3:30 p.m.
It was a tough week for the Peekskill Varsity Girls Basketball team.
On Tuesday, Jan. 14, Ardsley convincingly beat Peekskill at home, 53-17. Amari Murphy scored 10 points in that game.
Two days later, on Jan. 16, Peekskill was beaten by Hendrick Hudson, 61-15. In this game, Jealina Searight led the Red Devils in points with five. Amari Murphy and Nai’lah Smalls both scored four points.
Then, on Friday, Jan. 17, Scarsdale B narrowly scrapped a victory over Peekskill, 42-40. In this game, Amari Murphy led Peekskill in points with 27 and notched up two rebounds and two steals. In addition, Jealina Searight scored six points and got nine rebounds and 10 steals.
The Peekskill girls currently hold an overall record of three wins and eight losses. For their next match, the Red Devils will host Edgemont High School on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 6:15 p.m. The girls will also play Barack Obama School for Social Justice away from home on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 4:30 p.m and Roosevelt High School on Monday, Jan. 27 at home at 5 p.m.
Peekskill fell to John Jay Cross River, 72-6, on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Senior Tony Monchinski was the only wrestler to pick up points for the Red Devils, via pin at 145 lbs.
On Friday, Jan. 17, 31 girls from various schools competed in the district’s Red Devil All-Girls Round Robin Wrestling Tournament.
Results of the tournament include: Ursuline’s Gianna Cruz – first place in 107 lb class, Scarsdale’s Iman Maroof – first place in 114 lb class, Scarsdale’s Jacqueline Goldberg – first place in 120 lb class, Arlington’s Kelly Mahecha – first place in 126 lb class, Scarsdale’s Daisy Bennett – first place in 132 lb class, Liberty’s Isabella Wagner – first place in 145 lb class, Nyack’s Emily Rodriguez – first place in the 185 lb class.
Over the weekend, Peekskill competed in the annual Eric D’Agnese Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Somers High School. According to Coach Andre Lee, Peekskill took 12th out of 17 teams. Tony Monchinski placed fourth in the 145-pound class, and Kedwind Ramos placed fourth in the 190-pound class.
For their next dual, Peekskill will take on Lakeland-Panas on Thursday, Jan. 23 at home at 4:30 p.m. Senior night celebrations will be held prior to the dual. Peekskill will also compete in the Bulldog Wrestling Tournament this weekend at Beacon High School.
On Monday, Jan. 20, the Peekskill Winter Track & Field team competed in a meet at the Armory Track in New York City.
For the boys, Jermaine Carter received a gold medal for finishing first in the 600 meter run, with a time of 1:28.42.
For the girls, Arisa Specce received a silver medal for finishing second in the 1,500 race walk, with a time of 8:41.18.
On Saturday, Jan. 25, the Red Devils will compete in a Westchester County Meet at the Armory Track in New York City at 6 p.m.
The Peekskill-Hen Hud-Haldane Varsity Swim team started the week off with a devastating loss to Pearl River on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 102-66.
Prior to the match, the boys honored their seniors with a Senior Night celebration. A total of seven seniors were recognized: Andres Cabrera, Cristopher Chunchi, Thomas Loctizer (Haldane), Zachary Ninan, Marcus Pruitt, Brandon Rodriguez, and Cesar Quevedo.
The following day, on Jan. 15, the boys regrouped and picked up a victory over Nyack, 83-77. According to Swimcloud, for the Peekskill co-op team, Zachary Ninan placed first in the 200 freestyle in 2:09.27 and first in the 500 freestyle with a personal best time of 6:13.95, Thomas Locitzer placed first in the 50 freestyle with a personal best time of 26.12 and first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.72.
Peekskill’s merged team finished the week off by beating Port Chester, 95-69, on Friday, Jan. 17. For the Peekskill co-op team, Thomas Loctizer, Emmett Kopeloff, Marcus Pruitt, Zachary Ninan, placed first in the 200 medley relay in 2:10.90, Aaden Wik placed first in the 200 freestyle in a season best time of 2:24.41, Emmett Kopeloff placed first in the 200 individual medley in 2:39.20 and first in the 100 backstroke in 1:22.58, Zachary Ninan placed first in the 100 butterfly with a personal best time of 1:07.66, Thomas Loctizer placed first in the 100 freestyle with a personal best time of 59.10 and first in the 100 backstroke with a personal best time of 1:08.86, Cristopher Chunchi, Aaden Wik, Emmett Kopeloff, and Marcus Pruitt, finished first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:58.70.
The team’s final swim meet of the season will be held on Friday, Jan. 24, against Ossining at Ossining High School at 5 p.m. According to head coach Alana Donabie, the teams championship meet will be held on Feb. 1 at Mount Vernon High School.
On Jan. 9, Peekskill’s bowling team fell to North Salem, with both the boys and girls losing by a score of 7-0.
The Peekskill boys showed some improvement in their following match against John Jay Cross River (JJCR) on Jan. 13. In that match, the Peekskill boys lost, 4-3. Peekskill’s Elijah Resendes led his team in points with 453. For the girls, JJCR beat Peekskill, 7-0.
On Thursday, Jan. 16, Peekskill took on Hendrick Hudson. The Sailors proved to be too much for the Red Devils, beating both the boys and girls, 7-0.
Up next for Peekskill is a match against Yorktown on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at Cortlandt Lanes at 3:30 p.m. The bowling team will also play a positional round match on Thursday, Jan. 23 at Cortlandt Lanes at 3:30 p.m. Their opponents have not yet been confirmed.
