The Panthers stayed hot on the basketball court with a pair of strong wins over a league rival. In the pool, the race to the postseason is beginning to heat up.
Boys basketball avenges 2024 Sub-State loss
Derby boys basketball defeated Campus 70-52 on Jan. 14 in a rematch of the 2024 Sub-State title game. The Colts ended Derby’s season with a 46-45 buzzer beater in overtime. The Panthers (8-0, 5-0 in AVCTL-I) dominated the first meeting between the two schools.
Derby held a 30-22 lead going into halftime and never lost momentum. The Panthers got its biggest boost of energy after a halfcourt shot by Avant Riley at the end of the third quarter to put the Panthers up 49-36 going into the final eight minutes. In the final quarter, Derby outscored the Colts (0-6, 0-4 in AVCTL-I) 21-16. Derby had balanced scoring with 10 different players recording a bucket. Cayden Titus led the team with 13 points. Jack Ulwelling and Jaxson Malvo each had 12 points, while Riley posted a 10-point effort.
Derby will travel to Junction City on Jan. 20 to face the Blue Jays. The matchup was rescheduled from Jan. 9.

Lady Panthers cruise over Campus
The Lady Panthers saw a perfect blend of talent in the 69-34 win over Campus on Jan. 14. Derby (7-1, 5-0 in AVCTL-I) had contributing efforts from all classes in the win. Sophomore Aysia Fox led the team with 18 points. Freshmen Siaunna Carter and Sarai Graham had 12 and 10 points, respectively. Junior Karlie Demel had 11 points in the win.
Derby jumped out to a 22-11 lead in the first quarter and never relinquished the lead. The Lady Panthers held the Lady Colts (1-5, 0-4 in AVCTL-I) to just 13 points in the second half.
Since dropping the opening game of the season to Andover, the Lady Panthers have won seven straight. The Lady Panthers will be off for five days before having back-to-back road games at Junction City on Jan 20 and Hutchinson on Jan. 21.

State qualifiers emerge for boys swim
Derby had three state qualifiers at the Wichita North Invitational on Jan. 10 and 11. The Panthers finished fourth overall at the meet. In the diving-only portion on Jan. 10, the Panthers saw Tatum Johnson hit the state qualification mark with a score of 305.25. On Jan. 11, the Panthers had the 200 freestyle relay (Jared Hays, Ayden McFarren, Reed Parkhurst, Harrison Hallock) and 200 medley relay (Parkhurst, McFarren, Hays, Owen King) hit the state qualifying time. As of Jan. 14, Derby has qualified for state in four events. The Panthers will be in action on Jan. 16 at the Salina South Meet which begins at 1:30 p.m.

Wrestling head to Newton Tournament of Champions
Derby boys and girls wrestling will face top talent at the Newton Tournament of Champions. The girls will have the two-day tournament on Jan. 14 and 15. The boys will take the mat on Jan. 17 and 18.
Bowling opens league schedule
Derby bowling will begin the league schedule on Jan. 16 by taking on Hutchinson and Maize at the Maize Triangular at Bowlero Northridge (749 N Ridge Rd.) in Wichita. The event begins at 3 p.m. and the boys squad is looking to go unbeaten in league play for the second straight year.
