OU football co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Zac Alley during the game against Alabama on Nov. 23.
Oklahoma (6-6, 2-6 SEC) fell to LSU (8-4, 5-3) 37-17 on Saturday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Here’s what defensive coordinator Zac Alley said following OU’s loss:
On the defense’s struggles:
“I think it’s just little things. We started off with some momentum, but we weren’t able to play complimentary football across the board. It’s technique as much as anything else. We had a lot of guys that looked like there was busting one right open and it was, man, you got to turn the right way, you’ve got to stay in your gap to do the little things it takes to win. In a couple of those moments, we gave up explosive plays and that’s ultimately what led to the loss.”
On Eli Bowen:
“He’s just got continue to get better. We can always improve. Obviously, he’s been a great player for us, and he’s going to continue to be. He’s gonna be a cornerstone of his defense moving forward, He’s just got to continue to do what he’s doing, and just be an awesome player moving forward for us.”
On his first year coaching at Oklahoma:
“Obviously, for me, it was about learning a lot. Everybody says you come in and it’s new language, it’s new terminology and our guys are learning a new system on a lot of things that they do. That part will carry over to next year, so I am excited about that.
“Obviously, just the opportunity to be at a place like Oklahoma is just amazing. You see, the support you see the people that love it. It’s easy to see why they have been successful here for a long time. The passion, the fans have, it’s just impressive. So, it’s been a real joy to be back with Coach (Venables) and a part of this team and this culture. I am excited about the future and excited about what’s to come.”
On the defense’s improvement this season:
“I think we got a lot better actually. You just see the consistency of play and guys having to step up and make big-time plays and moments. I thought that you know we improved our physicality, our tackling and how we attack people. Tonight was a microcosm of they made some competitive plays on the edges, and we just got to be better at finishing some of those explosive runs and explosive passes.”
On Kip Lewis:
“Kip is going to have to step up even more into a leadership role. He will have to be a guy that’s a vocal guy for us, that’s ready to play, just like Danny (Stutsman) has been. Since he’s got, one of the most experienced guys on the team now, as far as the linebacking corps going out there, the expectations are high. They are that he comes back and he leads the group and continues to create that tradition of the linebacker we are trying to have here.”
On the transfer portal:
“I have no idea. I wish I did. Let me know if you find out, bu it’s going to be madness, as it always is, you are in and you are out. We’ll know a whole lot more about a week You go with what you think you know and if it’s something changes, you adapt in the moment.”
