12.38pm 10th March 2025 - Practice Range & Teaching
Wales Golf has launched a new scheme to expand the quality of coaching around the nation, to help develop more talented coaches and young players.
Golff Coach Cymru provides a high quality and unique face-to-face coach development opportunity to help align the Wales Golf pathway and further develop its coaching workforce.
“This is really important for the development of our pathway, and a really exciting programme,” explained Gareth Jenkins, Wales Golf Director of Performance and Pathways, . “In the past, there’s been coach development online, but we felt that an additional high-level face-to-face programme will upgrade the coach CPD experience and really help our coaches on their journey to developing talent and longer-term plans with players. This is why we have created Golff Coach Cymru.”
The 18-month course is aimed at PGA qualified coaches within Wales who want to grow the game and are experienced in working with juniors. The course will be delivered by the Wales Golf national coaching team, and supported by outside experts to explore the complete player journey and their long-term development.

Included in the course will be all technical, tactical, physical, and psychological elements, and will be covered through a practical approach aimed at adding to a coaches’ understanding and toolbox when working with players. The plan is to develop the next group of coaches who can have a profound impact on talent development, deepening the pool of top coaches around Wales.

“Talent can emerge from anywhere in Wales, so the more coaches we have to provide the best development from the start, the better. This is about recognising all the coaches in the pathway and helping each one progress.

“We want to talk the same language around our ‘winning skills’ at all levels and develop age and stage appropriate activities which develop brilliant basics and keep players engaged and wanting to improve and compete. It is not just about putting, scrambling, wedge play, driving – it is also about communication and lifestyle – there are a lot of different elements in developing a top golfer.

“This coach education plan could be about identifying the next group of coaches in the pathway for whenever our national coaches move on, or it could be about recognising and celebrating the jobs people do now at junior levels. Either way, it is about strengthening the pathway and the support available in Wales. We will choose 8-12 applicants, depending on the quality – all of which must be committed to the programme, prepared to travel, have passion and commitment, as well as an affinity with talent.”

Applications for Golff Coach Cymru are now open, with a closing date of March 28.
