KENNEBUNK, Maine — For Kennebunk High School senior Max Andrews, sports have been more than just a game. They’ve shaped his character, leadership, and future.
Andrews is a three-sport athlete and has served as captain of his football, basketball, and baseball teams.
“I think the biggest thing I learned from sports is just like having a great work ethic and just, like, showing up every single day and giving it your best,” Andrews said.
Kennebunk Varsity football coach Keith Noel said Andrews’ ability to lead his teammates is what stands out about him most.
“You have a kid who’s going to be a three-sport athlete, but also a captain in all three sports that’s kind of remarkable in its sense right there,” Noel said.
Andrews isn’t the loudest voice in the locker room, Noel said, but when he speaks, people listen.
“He’s pretty calm in his demeanor,” Noel said. “He doesn’t say a lot, but when he says a lot, the kids definitely listen. He’s definitely a show-by-your-actions type of young man.”
Andrews is known for leading by example, and this attitude is especially helpful when he volunteers at community sports clinics, mentoring young athletes.
“I want people to have the same love for it as I do,” Andrews said. “Every chance I got, I would go to the clinics and run the clinics and hang out with the kids, try and, you know, get to know them. Because when I was a kid, I looked up to all the high school kids, and I was, like, ‘I want to be like them one day.'”
Now, Andrews is preparing for his final season in a Rams jersey, playing the sport he loves most.
“It’s always kind of been my thing ever since I was little that I always want to play baseball,” he said.
His passion for the game will continue past high school. Andrews is committed to playing at Northeastern University, although he is still considering his options.
While his time at Kennebunk High School is winding down, Andrews hopes to be remembered not just for his athleticism but also for being a good teammate.
“I tried to play the game the right way in all three of the sports I played, and just kind of giving it everything you have,” Andrews said.
