At Tufts University, students have access to a wide array of experiences that can shape their futures, with one particularly unique opportunity being JumboCast—the official streaming platform for Tufts Athletics. Through JumboCast, students have the chance to contribute to the broadcast of various home sporting events, including football, basketball, soccer, and more.
Trevor Russo, a former Tufts student, is one of the many who benefited from this opportunity, and his time with the club inspired him and his family to establish the Russo Azmy JumboCast Endowed Fund with a generous gift. Through this fund, JumboCast continues to grow and evolve, ensuring the production of high-quality broadcasts for every Jumbo event.
Russo, who majored in Computer Science and Film and Media Studies, developed a passion for broadcasting during his time at Tufts, with his work at JumboCast being one of the most meaningful aspects of his college experience. Through his involvement in the club, he gained invaluable skills and connections, leading to internships in broadcast media, including a prestigious summer position at CBS, which he secured through networking with a Tufts alumna.
"JumboCast allowed me to explore an emerging passion for sports broadcasting that I had coming out of high school," said Russo. "Some of my most memorable moments, not just as a Tufts student but in my life, came from producing and calling games, creating graphic packages, and bonding with the people in the club. It allowed me to meet incredible individuals who shared a passion for sports and production. Especially during the COVID years, JumboCast was a place where I truly connected and thrived."
What sets JumboCast apart from other campus clubs, both at Tufts and across the country, is its unique position as a student-run broadcasting organization. Few clubs—if any—at the NCAA Division I, II, or III levels operate with the same scale or autonomy. JumboCast broadcasts a wide variety of events, all run and produced by students from start to finish.
"The fact that it's a student-run club is amazing," said Russo. "Most places wouldn't let you start calling games right away. But at JumboCast, you have a lot of freedom from the very beginning. Plus, while many schools outsource their broadcasts to third-party companies or partner with large networks, here, we get to produce 100% of our content."
Since Russo's graduation in 2021, JumboCast has continued to thrive and grow. With more than 50 active members, the club has expanded its offerings, with students filling a variety of roles, including graphics production, play-by-play announcing, producing, and camera work. Thanks to the Russo Azmy JumboCast Endowed Fund, the quality of broadcasts has consistently improved, with upgrades to both software and hardware that enhance the viewing experience for fans, whether at home or on mobile devices.
"During my time with JumboCast, there were several points when we needed better software and hardware to improve the reliability and scope of our broadcasts," said Russo. "This donation helps alleviate some of those challenges for future members, giving them access to better equipment and technology. Ultimately, it will benefit the entire Tufts community, providing greater engagement with sports events for players, students, coaches, and families."
The impact of the Russo Azmy JumboCast Endowed Fund is especially evident in the club's recent growth. Jared Cohen, the former general manager of JumboCast and a current Tufts student, has seen firsthand how the club's capabilities have expanded in recent years.
"In my time at Tufts, I've seen tremendous improvements in our broadcast quality," said Cohen. "We've gone from a single-camera setup to consistently using two or three cameras. We've also introduced new graphics, added a pre-game and halftime show called the 'JumboZone,' and significantly raised the overall production value."
These improvements stem not only from ongoing investments in equipment but also from the dedication of Tufts students who devote their time to refining their craft—studying statistics, preparing for broadcasts, and troubleshooting technical issues to ensure the best possible experience for viewers.
"Together, we've raised the standard for what a student-run sports broadcasting organization can achieve," said Cohen. "I'm excited to see where the club goes next as it continues to innovate and grow."
Trevor Russo, now working in the graphics department at CBS Sports in New York City, is proud to see the continued success of JumboCast, an organization that gave him the foundation for his career.
"I feel a great sense of pride for JumboCast," said Russo. "We've always had a bit of an underdog mentality, and I'm thrilled to see the club's continued success. They've made tremendous strides in terms of engagement and presence on campus. Membership is up, and they've introduced pregame/postgame shows, done an all-female broadcast, and created innovative social media content. They keep pushing the boundaries, and I truly believe they have one of the best student-run broadcasts in the country. I'm incredibly proud of all they've accomplished and can't wait to see what they do next."
--JUMBOS--

12.12.24
12.05.24
11.26.24
11.26.24
11.26.24
Thanks for visiting !
The use of software that blocks ads hinders our ability to serve you the content you came here to enjoy.
We ask that you consider turning off your ad blocker so we can deliver you the best experience possible while you are here.
Thank you for your support!

source
