CHARLESTON — After finishing as Class A state runner-ups the past two seasons, Tucker County looks to break through in 2025.
The second-seeded Mountain Lions (19-2) face No. 7 Magnolia (16-8) at 1 p.m. today in quarterfinal action inside the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.
Despite losing four starters from last year’s squad, which lost a heart-breaking decision to Tug Valley in the 2024 title game, Tucker County has not missed a beat behind all-state senior guard Trevan Bonner and 6-foot-3 senior forward Garrett Wilfong, along with immediate impacts from junior guards Mikey Mitchell and Sam Marks.
Bonner leads the team with 21 points per game, with Wilfong adding 14.0 per night, Mitchell nearly 10 points ppg. and Marks 7.0 per outing.
Junior Xander Lambert, a 6-2 forward, and sophomores Ethan Cummings and Cayden Arnold have also been big contributors for head coach Daniel Helmick.
The Mountain Lions’ lone losses of the season have came at the hands of top-seed Tug Valley and Class AA, top-seed Williamstown.
Tucker County and Tug Valley split their games during the regular season.
The Mountain Lions defeated Magnolia, 81-51, in January.
The Blue Eagles of head coach Dave Tallman are paced in scoring by junior guard Kingston Christen at 21.5 ppg.
Senior forward Dubale Greathouse hits for 12.1 points per outing, while senior guard Hunter Oates 10 points per contest.
The winner of today’s game faces the victor between No. 3 East Hardy (19-5) and No. 6 Clay-Battelle, who faced off at 9:30 a.m. today.
The other quarterfinal contests for today include Tug Valley (22-2) vs. Montcalm (17-6) at 5:30 p.m. and No. 4 Greater Beckley Christian (15-8) vs. No. 5 Huntington St. Joseph’s (16-7) at 9 p.m.
