With a marching band, NFL cheerleaders and costumed Mardi Gras krewe members, New Orleans unveiled a new brand for its Louis Armstrong International Airport on Tuesday as the city readies for Super Bowl LIX.
The rebrand’s centerpiece is a new “plane-de-lis” logo designed to look like an amalgamation of a passenger jet and New Orleans’ signature fleur-de-lis emblem. Announced in a slick video narrated by famed trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, the rebrand comes as celebrities, tourists and NFL personalities pour through the airport ahead of the Feb. 9 big game.

The new logo is intended to carry the airport well beyond the Super Bowl, Mayor LaToya Cantrell told an enthusiastic crowd during a presentation at the airport’s first-floor jazz garden.
“This brand that we’re unveiling will live on for generations to come,” Cantrell said.
A big Super Bowl logo had gone up on an upper floor walkway.
Travelers and airport employees cheered as New Orleans Saints cheerleaders danced, the Edna Karr High School marching band played, and bedecked Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club members paraded around the presenters.

In a nod to scheduled halftime performer Kendrick Lamar, the band marched past a baggage claim and launched into a rendition of the California rapper’s hit single “Not Like Us.”
Months of preparations for the Super Bowl — including more than 550 projects to fix some of New Orleans’ deeply-rooted infrastructure problems — have ramped up in recent weeks.
Road repairs have unfolded at a furious pace in the downtown area near the Super Dome. Planners said a once-in-a-generation snowstorm that struck the city last week snarled preparations but did not significantly delay them.

Events will be scattered throughout downtown the week before the game, closing roads and likely creating heavy traffic for locals. Among the largest is the NFL’s Super Bowl Experience at the Convention Center from Wednesday through Saturday and the NFL Honors awards night on Thursday at the Saenger Theater.
At the airport rebrand ceremony, Cantrell thanked the 4,000 airport staff for their contributions to making things run smoothly as people flock to the city.
“I understand the blood, sweat and tears you’ve poured out for this city,” Cantrell told dozens of airport workers.
After the new airport terminal opened in 2019, the next set of planned upgrades includes a new five-mile road that is intended be the basis for a proposed electric light rail from the terminal to a transportation hub on the south side of Airline Highway.
The road also will provide better shuttle bus service to the economy parking lot in the old terminal, officials said over the summer.
