‘The Brutalist’, a three-hour epic drama about a holocaust survivor directed by Brady Corbet took home one of the most prestigious awards at the 82nd Golden Globes, which was held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Monday morning (IST). The ceremony was hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser who made history as the first-ever solo female host at the event.
The comedian, known not to hold back her tongue, made some cutting jokes in her opening monologue at the ceremony, even taking a dig at the producers and even at CBS, which live streamed the event globally. "If you are watching on CBS, hello, if you’re watching on Paramount+ you have six days left to cancel your free trial." She went on: "I really feel like I have made it. I’m in a room full of producers at the Beverly Hilton and this time, all of my clothes are on. It was worth it."
‘The Brutalist’, which was nominated for seven awards, went on to secure three awards, including Best Actor for Adrien Brody for his performance in the movie. Adrien Brody was in the race for Best Actor along with fellow nominees Timothee Chalamet, Daniel Craig, Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes and Sebastian Stan. The Golden Globes victory for ‘The Brutalist’ is an indicator for a possible win for the movie at the upcoming Academy Awards. Brady Corbet who helmed ‘The Brutalist’ also won the award for Best Director. Jacquez Audiard’s ‘Emilia Perez’, which led with the most number of nominations in the Golden Globes race, was adjudged the Best non-English language film, beating Payal Kapadia’s ‘All We Imagine As Light’. Apart from Best Foreign Language film, ‘Emilia Perez’ secured wins for Best Musical or Comedy, Best supporting actor for Zoe Saldana and Best song ‘El Mal’ sung by Zoe Saldana, Karla Sofia Gascon and Camille.
Meanwhile, Fernanda Torres who was nominated along with actors Pamela Anderson, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Tilda Swinton, and Kate Winslet was adjudged the Best Female Actor for her role in ‘I’m Still Here’. Critically-acclaimed series ‘Baby Reindeer’ grabbed the award for Best Limited Series. ‘Shogun’, which had four nominations, swept the awards ceremony, winning the Golden Globes for Best Drama Series and Best Television Male actor in a Drama series for Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada also received the award for Best Television Male Actor in a Drama series for his performance in ‘Shogun’. Anna Sawai from ‘Shogun’ also won the award for Best Female actor in a drama series. She was nominated alongside Kathy Bates, Emma D’Arcy, Maya Erskine, Keira Knightley and Keri Russell.
‘The Substance’ star Demi Moore went on to receive the Best Actress in a motion picture at the Golden Globes. As per Variety, Demi Moore called out the movie producer who once said she’s just a "popcorn actress." "I made that mean I could do movies that were successful and made a lot of money, but that I couldn’t be acknowledged. I bought in and I believed that. That corroded me…"
Musical ‘Wicked’, which competed against ‘The Wild Robot’, ‘Twisters’, ‘Inside Out 2’, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, ‘Beetlejuice Beetljuice’ and ‘Alien Romulus’ was honoured with the award for Best Cinematic and Box Office achievement at the ceremony. ‘Hacks’, which follows a dark mentorship between Deborah Vance and an entitled 25-year-old won the Golden Globe for Best TV series- Musical or Comedy. This was the second win for ‘Hacks’ as American actress Jean Smart received the best female actor award in a TV series- musical or comedy for her performance in the series, earlier in the day.
Five-time winner Jodie Foster won the Golden Globe for Best Female Actor- Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture for ‘True Detective: Night Country.’ Veteran Colin Farrel also took home the award for Best Actor in a Limited Series for his performance in ‘The Penguin’. Colin Farrel who received his award joked that he ‘had no one to thank. I did it all by myself." Actor Zoe Saldana took home the first Golden Globe, winning the Best Supporting Actress for her role in ‘Emilia Perez’. ‘El Mal’ from ‘Emilia Perez’, which was sung by Zoe Saldana, Karla Sofia Gascon and Camille won the Best Song in a Motion Picture.
‘Flow’ about a solitary cat whose home is swept away by a great flood, won the award for Best Motion Picture- Animated. Meanwhile, Sebastian Stan, who made his Golden Globes red carpet debut along with his girlfriend Annabelle Wallis, won the award for Best Actor in a Comedy Film. Actor Jeremy Allen White, who won the Golden Globe last year, took home the award for Best Performance by an actor in a TV series- Musical or Comedy for his role in ‘The Bear’. Second time Golden Globe winner Ali Wong took home the Best Stand-Up comedian award on TV. Kieran Culkin, brother of ‘Home Alone’ actor Macaulay Culkin, won the award for Best Supporting Male Actor in a Motion Picture for his performance in ‘A Real Pain’.
Payal Kapadia’s ‘All We Imagine As Light,’ which was nominated for two awards, including Best Director and non-English film, could not secure any wins at the prestigious ceremony. Payal was the first Indian filmmaker to be nominated in this category in 26 years, after Shekhar Kapur. Viola Davis and Ted Danson, were honoured with lifetime achievements at the ceremony. Andrew Garfield, Dwayne Johnson and Jennifer Coolidge, were also among the presenters.
