Here is your Texas Tech sports news roundup for Monday, March 17, 2025.
No team on campus needed a good weekend more than the Texas Tech baseball squad. Fortunately, that's exactly what it got.
Opening Big 12 play with a three-game series at Houston, the Red Raiders came home with three big wins. Perhaps that will start to turn this frustrating season around.
Friday night, the pitching staff starred in a 4-1 win. Starter Mac Heuer went 6.0 innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out five and walking only three. It was his best start of the season, and it set the tone for the weekend.
Meanwhile, reliever Parker Hutyra finished off the game with three perfect innings. That effort from the two hurlers was exactly what this team's struggling pitching staff needed.
Saturday, it was the offense that had to carry the day. In a 13-8 win, Tech bashed ten extra-base hits. That outburst included two homers each from Robin Villeneuve and Logan Hughes.
In the game, the Red Raiders jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the third inning only to see Houston cut the lead to 11-8 in the fourth. However, another heroic performance on the mound kept Tech in front.
Reliever Jack Cebert tossed 5.2 innings to close out the game. During that time, he gave up no runs on two hits while striking out eight.
Sunday, head coach Tim Tadlock saw his team put together a complete effort at the plate and on the mound in an 11-1 run-rule win in eight innings. Tech jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning and coasted from there.
Zane Petty got the start, throwing 4.2 innings and giving up only one run on six hits. At the plate, Tech got homers from Dylan Maxcey and Tracer Lopez.
After playing an extremely difficult schedule to start the season, the Red Raiders entered the weekend just 3-11 overall. However, they are now 3-0 in conference play after finally winning a series. Hopefully, the good vibes will continue on Tuesday when New Mexico comes to Lubbock before TCU comes to Rip Griffin Park this weekend for three games.
Prior to this weekend, the Texas Tech softball team had not swept a Big 12 series since 2019. That streak is now over after the Red Raiders absolutely worked over Baylor in Waco for three games.
At 23-7 overall, Tech is off to its best start to conference play in the history of the program at 5-1.
Friday, the series opened with a 4-1 Red Raider win. Hailey Toney went 4-4 in the batter's box, driving in two runs, while NiJaree Canady tossed a complete game in the circle allowing one unearned run while striking out seven Bears.
Saturday, Tech flexed its muscles in a 14-0 laugher. Starting pitcher Chloe Riassetto improved to 5-1 by tossing 7.0 innings for the complete-game shutout. Meanwhile, Alexa Langeliers bashed a pair of two-run homers as part of a three-hit day.
Sunday, Tech closed out the sweep with a 3-0 win. Canady was back in the circle where she struck out 11. She's now 10-3 on the season with a tiny ERA of 0.62. At the plate, Tech got RBIs from Hailey Toney and Victoria Valdez.
Next, Tech travels to Columbia, South Carolina for a three-game set against South Carolina. The Gamecocks are 22-5 overall but just 2-4 in SEC play.
Also this weekend, the Texas Tech track and field teams took part in the NCAA Indoor Championships in Virginia. Unfortunately, neither the men nor the women came close to claiming a title.
Scoring 22 points as a team, the men finished eighth. The team's top performance came in the form of a second place finish from the men's 4×400 team of Jonathan Crawford, Josh Bour, George Garcia, and Desean Boyce. Running a 3:03.77, they put forth the third-fastest time in school history for that event.
The women saw Temitope Adeshina win her first NCAA title when she cleared 1.94m (6-4.25) in the high jump. Also, Tamiah Washington claimed the silver medal in the triple jump with a jump of 13.72m. Now, the focus of the track team turns to the outdoor portion of the season. This weekend, the teams will split up to compete at meets at Abilene Christian and TCU.
