PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Three teens broke into Academy Sports and Outdoors in Port Arthur early Saturday, attempting to steal guns before SWAT stormed the building and arrested them.
Around 1:30 a.m., Port Arthur Police Department officers received an alarm call about a possible break-in at the Academy located on Memorial Blvd., according to Lt. Jeremy Lloyd.
When officers got there, they found the front glass shattered and saw individuals inside appearing to burglarize the business.
A store manager arrived at the Academy, and officers accessed the store’s alarm system, confirming the juveniles were inside.
“We got an owner out here, excused me, not an owner, a manager of the business. We were able to patch into their their alarm system and see the juveniles inside,” said Lt. Lloyd.
Police then called in the SWAT team, which made entry and took three male suspects into custody which were two juveniles, ages 14 and 15, and an 18-year-old.
“We backed off, called in our SWAT team. SWAT team ended up making entry and apprehending 3 male subjects inside of the business, 2 juveniles and 1 young adult,” he said.
The teens appeared to be attempting to steal guns but were apprehended before they could take anything, according to Lt. Lloyd.
“Looks like they were trying to steal guns, but they were not able to do that since we got here and caught them.”
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office K-9 team and their drone operators assisted in the operation. Port Arthur Police Department’s Crime Scene Unit responded to process the scene, according to police.
The 18-year-old suspect was booked into jail, and the juveniles were taken to a juvenile detention center.
“It was a good all-around effort. We have the three in custody, the adult is going to jail tonight and the juveniles are going to juvenile detention tonight,” said Lt. Lloyd.
