LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – The Lake Charles College Prep Boys indoor track team accomplished something never done in the program’s history: win a state championship.
“It’s a great accomplishment all the work we put into this we train like champions day in and day out and to be champions is a great feeling,” LCCP head coach Jackie Rhine said.
The story behind this team is one that began with heartbreak but through hard work and determination, they found their moment of joy.
“Exactly a year ago we lost the state championship because of disqualification and the whole offseason the kids wanted to right their story. So it was a great feeling to finally get that weight off our shoulders and to be named state champions this year after the way it ended last year,” Rhine said.
To get to the top of the mountain coach Rhine knew he had to push his athletes harder and reflect on what he needed to do better as a coach.
“He always kept the thought of us losing on our mind so it can make us want to work and push every day he always did little things to remind us that we got to be great when that time comes,” LCCP track & field athlete Braylon White said.
The Trailblazers maintained a positive outlook to overcome last season’s challenges.
“It felt good we’ve been preparing since last year since the upset going through practices with coaches staying on us every day to remember what we have going for us so we just kept to it,” LCCP track & field athlete Cameron Brazzle said.
“We had to be really mature and just come in with a strong mindset that we’re going to win,” LCCP track & field athlete Kalen Antoine said.
