This match rarely disappoints. It’s generally the most intense prep soccer game of the season in Whatcom County, made even more so this year by a decrease from three to two state berths being available.
Sehome, this year’s top seed, also won the championship last season in a 5-0 thumping of Bellingham. It was the start of an unlikely run by the No. 4-seeded Mariners that ended one win short of a 2A state championship appearance.
At least three state-quality teams will be vying for two berths. Sehome (13-0-1) will likely see Bellingham (11-3-1) in the semifinals, barring a massive first-round collapse from either program.
Then there’s a possible championship matchup between Sehome and Squalicum (10-5) — a clash we’ve already seen twice this year, with the Mariners taking both.
Western Washington University track and field is gearing up to defend its pair of league titles.
The Vikings swept the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships last season for the first time in program history. Western’s men’s team earned its 10th title (and fourth in a row), while the women’s team won its first.
Six of the eight Western athletes who earned event victories at last season’s event returned, setting the Vikings up nicely for a run at two more titles.
Junior Ski to Sea is back for its second-annual race after Whatcom Events revived and revamped the event in 2023.
It’s primarily for those ages 8 to 18 who are either too young to compete in the main Ski to Sea race or want to try a lower-octane race first. The event includes downhill ski/snowboard, run, bike and kayak legs.
Of the local recreation events, it is on the expensive side, with current registration prices (post-March 15) set at $160 — still a reasonable fee given the size of the race. Whether your kid is participating or not, this is a great spectator- and community-friendly event for Whatcom County youth.
