Actress Selena Gomez was noticeably left out of the 2025 Oscar nominations list, which was announced on Thursday morning, January 23.
The Hollywood star would’ve been up for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 2024’s Emilia Pérez if she wasn’t snubbed.
However, Gomez has other things to celebrate right now, including her engagement to Benny Blanco and possibly even some new music they hinted at making together.
Instead of Gomez, the actresses up for Best Supporting Actress are Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), Ariana Grande (Wicked), Felicity Jones (The Brutalist), Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), and Gomez’s co-star Zoe Saldaña.
Over all, Emilia Pérez snatched 12 Oscar nominations, including in some of the biggest categories.

Gomez might have been snubbed by the Oscars, but she did receive a Best Supporting Actress nod at the BAFTAs — a first for her.
Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez slammed Gomez over her “indefensible” Spanish in the film in a since-deleted episode of the Hablando de Cine podcast.
“Selena is indefensible,” he said. “I [watched Emilia Pérez] with people, and every time she had a scene, we looked at each other to say, ‘Wow, what is this?’”
“I like the film, aside from the Selena [moments] that jump at you, because it has salvageable things,” he continued. “But I told myself, ‘How weird that the director doesn’t speak English or Spanish and movie is in Spanish and English, and it takes place in Mexico and you don’t understand the culture.’ It’s like if I made a film in Russian without knowing the culture or speaking Russian and talk in French.”
After being criticized, Gomez addressed the claim by commenting on a video clip of the podcast that appeared on TikTok.
“I understand where you are coming from…I’m sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given,” she wrote. “Doesn’t take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie.”

Derbez went on to apologize to her via the same platform.
“I truly apologize for my careless comments–they are indefensible and go against everything I stand for. As Latinos, we should always support one another,” he wrote. “There’s no excuse. I was wrong, and I deeply admire your career and your kind heart.”
“Emilia Pérez deserves to be celebrated, not diminished by my thoughtless remarks,” he continued. “I’m walking away from this with an important lesson learned. While I understand if you cannot accept my apology, please know it comes from the heart.”
Meanwhile, she seems to be more interesting with making new music as she teased online.
Blanco shared a cip on TikTok which suggested they are making music together.
In the three-second clip, Blanco opens a door and Gomez, who he began dating in 2023, is sitting on a couch with a mic positioned in front of her.
The music producer says “hi,” before she greets him with the same word.
He shared a message from a fan named Esme Hermes over the clip who told him: “Benny please make some new songs for our queen.”
He captioned the post: “Replying to @Esme Hermes in case tik tok doesn’t exist next week” – a reference to the social media platform being banned in the US.
Fans rushed to the comments section to speculate if the clip means the couple are teaming up to make music.
One fan said: “Benny we luv u spill the tea in the tracks,” as another fan wrote: “AHHHHHH THIS BETTER BE TRUE.”
A third added: ”OH MY GOD I’M SCREAMING IT’S FINALLY HAPPENING AAAH.”
In 2015 before they newly engaged couple became an item, they coproduced two songs, Kill Em with Kindness and Same Old Love, which featured on the singer’s 2015 album Revival.
They also collaborated for 2019 song I Can’t Get Enough that featured Tainy and J Balvin and in August 2023, they worked together on her song Single Soon.
Last month the pair shocked fans by announcing their engagement. Their engagement occured during a picnic where they ate Taco Bell, Gomez revealed in social media posts.
“Forever begins now,” the Only Murders in the Building actress captioned photos of the fast food spread and close-up engagement ring photos.
