Andrew D. Pease will lead the Oneonta Community Concert Band during its annual “Salute to Veterans” concert Nov. 9.
ONEONTA — Oneonta Community Concert Band announced it will present a musical “Salute to Veterans” at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9.
According to a media release, conductor Andrew D. Pease will lead the players at the First United Methodist Church at 66 Chestnut St.
Pease said in the release the band’s performances will include mainstays such as “Courage for Winds” by Adrienne Albert, the “Armed Forces Salute,” arranged by Bob Lowden, and “God Bless America” by Irving Berlin. Courage in the face of adversity is an element of “Courage for Winds.” “Camerado” by Michael Markowski speaks musically about brotherhood, which can live on and even set lasting joy amidst loss. Percy Grainger’s “Irish Tune from County Derry,” with its “pipes are calling,” speaks to the devastation a family can feel when fathers, sons and daughters are called to war.
Another piece the band will perform is “Military Escort,” which is from an educational collection by Henry Fillmore, who used the pseudonym Harold Bennett, the release stated.
John Philip Sousa’s “The Gallant Seventh” was born from military pageantry, Pease, an associate professor of music and a department co-chair at Hartwick College in Oneonta, said in the release. Selections from “Les Miserables” by Claude-Michel Schonberg reference the courage needed to fight for a belief.
Kenneth Alford’s “Army of the Nile” celebrates early allied victories in World War II, specifically the routing of the Italian army in Egypt by British forces, Pease said in the release. “With Honor and Brave Heart” was written by William Owens in memory of the tragic shooting in 2009 at an Army base in Texas, he said.
Veterans Day is Nov. 11, and the OCCB traditionally performs on a date near the holiday to recognize the service and sacrifices of veterans past and present, the release stated. The concert music also references historic conflicts and experiences of military service. The OCCB concert is free and open to the public. The OCCB includes professional and amateur musicians from throughout the area. This performance is supported by a generous grant from the Future for Oneonta Foundation.
