Redding Sports Complex hosts roller hockey tournament
REDDING, Calif. – Just days after the Redding City Council voted to keep running the Redding Sports Complex, Shasta Roller Hockey League held a weekend long hockey tournament there that brought hundreds of people to the complex and to the Redding area to enjoy all of the action.
The Shasta Roller Hockey League’s Vice President, Melody Mugridge, told Action News Now that people came out to the tournament from all over the west coast — including one player who traveled all the way from St. Louis, Missouri to attend.
Mugridge says that this is the only place within 200 miles that can host roller hockey games, and said she is thankful that the city chose to keep the doors open.
“It’s been really fun and a great way to bring life back into this facility,” said Mugridge. “So, it’s been really wonderful, especially on the heels of the [city council] meeting on Tuesday.”
One of the challenges the city faces with taking on full-time operations of the park is finding the money to make necessary improvements.
Redding Parks and Trails Foundation came to the tournament to help. The non-profit organization hosted a beer garden with 100% of all profits going to the sports complex.
Alexis Brown, one of the Foundation’s board members, said that they plan on being there for other events to keep funds coming in. “We are just really invested in getting our sports complex and the trails and parks here in Redding done up right,” she added.
Mugridge says that since there is now a long-term operational plan for the complex, they, as well as other leagues, will be hosing many more events like this in the future.
