AUSTIN, Texas — Texas is likely to say goodbye to Longhorns men’s basketball coach Rodney Terry after three seasons, according to a report from 247 Sports.
The news came after the Longhorns blew a 13-point lead against Xavier on Wednesday night, losing 86-80 in the First Four of March Madness. Some say the loss may have been the deciding factor in Terry’s future with the program.
According to 247 Sports, Xavier coach Sean Miller is a leading candidate to replace Terry, who is entitled to a $5.4 million settlement for the remaining three years in his contract.
Terry took over Texas’ program as interim coach in early 2023 after former coach Chris Beard was suspended and later fired midseason over a family violence charge on allegations that he choked, hit and bit his fiancée. Terry was hired as full time head coach later that year, making big gains in his debut season.
Terry previously served as an assistant coach to the Longhorns on Rick Barnes’ staff from 2002 to 2011.
While Terry’s future with the program is unclear, 247 Sports sources say there was already “growing concern” after the Longhorns’ recent loss to Xavier and falling results in the Big 12, the SEC and the NCAA Tournament last year.
