WESTFIELD — Carson Swanson found himself in some rarified air Monday night at the Westfield High School gym.
Literally and figuratively.
The Wolverines’ senior standout poured in 43 points, dished out 10 assists and collected 10 steals to lead his team to an 87-40 victory over Maple Grove in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 basketball game.
Oh, yes, he also reached a significant individual milestone.
For it was his dunk with 51/2 minutes left in the third quarter that gave him 2,000 points for his career, which puts him on a path to become the all-time leading boys scorer in Chautauqua County history.

“It just doesn’t happen very often,” Westfield coach Nolan Swanson said of his son’s achievement. “It takes a lot of work. With Carson, the thing we always talk about is play the game as it comes. His assist numbers are no joke either. Assists have always been his thing. He’s just a sharp point guard, he sees the floor and he understands the game.”
And Carson, who had 34 points at halftime, sure had “game” last night. In a shade over 20 minutes of playing time, he shot 17 of 25 from the floor, including 4 of 7 from the arc; and blocked three shots. At game’s end, he received a commemorative basketball and posed for plenty of photographs with his teammates.
Joining Carson in double figures for the Wolverines (9-1, 4-0), who led 49-15 at halftime, was Zach Maguire with 16 points.
For the Red Dragons (0-7, 0-4), Liam Colburn scored 16 points and Camden Lombardo chipped in 11.
