In addition to the new hospital, Queen’s said it also plans to increase health care services on Hawaii Island.
The Queen’s Health Systems said Monday that it plans to build a new acute-care hospital in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii Island, on a 31-acre parcel of land the company owns in West Hawaii Business Park.
Queen’s said the 80-bed facility will include both inpatient and emergency care, along with an ambulatory care center and a helipad, and a spokesperson told PBN that the cost will run between $400 million and $500 million. The area’s only other acute-care hospital is Hawaii Health Systems Corp.’s 94-bed Kona Community Hospital in Kealakekua, 10 miles south of Kailua-Kona.
“Our goal is to create a centralized outpatient and specialty care hub to serve the West and North region of Hawaii Island,” Jason Chang, president and CEO of The Queen’s Health Systems, said in a statement. “This plan presents a transformative vision for healthcare delivery on the Island of Hawaii. Anchored in the principles of ‘care close to home,’ this plan addresses the pressing challenges of delivering healthcare in rural and isolated settings while leveraging innovation, sustainability and community engagement to create a resilient and patient-centered healthcare ecosystem.”
In conjunction with the new facility, Queen’s is also exploring an affordable housing program to support its workforce.
“This vision not only enhances Queen’s ability to recruit and retain staff but also fosters deeper community ties as employees become homeowners,” Chang said.
In addition to the new hospital, Queen’s also plans to develop a 40,000-square-foot state-of-the-art center for outpatient and specialty care at Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital that will include a cancer center.
The company also said that it plans to provide new health care services in Kona, including skilled nursing, post-acute care and urgent care facilities.
“By combining advanced medical capabilities with community-focused solutions, this initiative will not only meet the growing needs of local residents but also position Hawaii Island as a destination for world-class care,” said Chang.
Queen’s said that these plans will come together in phases over seven years. Queen’s noted that funding for the project could include private investments and philanthropic contributions.
