President Donald Trump’s second term “could have lasting effects on college athletics,” according to Jesse Dougherty of the WASHINGTON POST. He wrote college sports “have maybe never had a less certain future,” making 2025 “critical.” Some of that “will be directly related to Trump and a Republican-controlled Congress,” but lawsuits in college sports continue, meaning its foundation “could be rocked…from many different directions.” Dougherty wrote if the House v. NCAA antitrust case is settled in April, many schools are “expected to start sharing revenue directly with athletes by July.” However, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights’ Title IX memo, issued last week, said that NIL payments “count as financial assistance, calling for proportional treatment for male and female athletes.” Dougherty wrote the Department of Education under Trump “could easily rewrite the guidance or roll it back entirely.” U.S. Sen Ted Cruz (R-Texas), the “most vocal Republican lawmaker on college sports legislation, immediately opposed the memo,” which is neither law nor regulation. President Joe Biden’s Justice Department “took aim at the House v. NCAA settlement terms,” noting that the proposed cap of $20.5M “violates free-market principals.” U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken granted preliminary approval in October. U.S. Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi “could easily amend the DOJ’s view or strike it altogether.” The final approval hearing is scheduled for April 7 (WASHINGTON POST, 1/22).
Baseball’s Hall of Fame makes history; NFL Divisional Playoff Round viewership slightly down; the new Unrivaled League’s debut viewership and the Dodgers continue to spend big in free agency.
