Years from now, when the question is posed about the first team to win a district championship at Prairieville High School, the girls soccer team will have an emphatic answer.
Prairieville put the finishing touches on a perfect run through District 6-II with a 6-0 shutout victory Saturday over Livonia at Hurricane Stadium.
“We did not think this,” said Prairieville coach Chris Goodall, who spent the previous 15 years at East Ascension.
Some of his players, namely freshman Hannan Lambert, begged to differ.
“I thought we were going to win,” said Lambert, who delivered her second hat trick of the season. “It felt good to be the first district champion. We wanted to be the first one. We just wanted to win, and we did that.”
Prairieville (11-5-1, 4-0) outscored its district competition 28-1. The Hurricanes, No. 12 in the latest LHSAA Division II power rankings, closes out the regular season with a pair of Division I challenges, visiting Dutchtown on Thursday, before hosting Live Oak on Jan. 27.
“They don’t have a lot of girls new to soccer,” said Livonia coach Jeremy Armand, who noted Jordan Templeton extended her school record for steals to 279. “We knew they would be experienced and would be tough. We knew we had to play pretty flawless to able to beat them.”
Prairieville seized early control behind Lambert who scored seven minutes into game.
Sophomore Sophie Collins added her team-leading 16th assist with a pass to Lambert whose shot from the left side of the box found the back of the net in the 12th minute. Junior Callie Norman had a free kick 50 yards out, but a loose ball wound up at Lambert’s right foot and into the net for her 16th goal of the season and a 3-0 lead in the 16th minute.
“She did a good job today,” Goodall said of Lambert. “Sophie Collins has carried this season. She’s a big reason why we’re here.”
Junior Adyson Naquin made it 4-0 at halftime with a rebound shot off Livonia goalkeeper Skyla Leonard into the net in the 36th minute. The Wildcats (13-7-0, 3-1) went with regular starter Avery Lanier (four saves), who missed her two previous starts because of illness, in the second half.
Prairieville, which had 13 of its 18 shots on goal, scored twice in the first seven minutes of the second half.
Naquin finished with a brace, knocking in a rebound from close range, and junior right back Chloe Muller buried a penalty kick after Livonia was called for handling in the box.
Prairieville registered its sixth shutout with a combined effort in goal from Hadley Walker, Katherine Casey and Kenley McClean (2 saves). Sydney Naquin and Layla Sonnier are the team’s two center backs, while Muller and Jessica Ruiz are the outside backs.
“It was a great challenge to start a program brand new,” said Goodall, who handed his team district championship T-shirts afterward. “It was really a big deal.”
