PORTLAND — As of Jan. 1, the Town of Portland and the Village of Brocton have officially cut ties with Chadwick Bay Intermunicipal Water Works (CBI).
The two municipalities announced their intent to separate from an agreement with CBI to handle billing and water services in June. In the months since, Brocton and Portland have crafted an intermunicipal agreement to handle billing and other services CBI provided in the past.
So far, so good.
The dues that each municipality owed to get out of the agreement have been paid. One remaining bill for usage in the last billing period will be received on its regular schedule. Billing for the new services between the two municipalities is underway.
Regarding what was left for Portland and Brocton to work with, especially due to inaccurate readings of meters, Portland Town Supervisor Rich Lewis said, “It was as messy as we thought it would be.”
Lewis commended the Brocton Department of Public Works, the Village of Brocton Clerk’s office, and Mitch Magierski, the new Water Maintenance Worker through the joint Brocton-Portland Water System, for their efforts to “un-mess it up.” Magierski is a former CBI employee who was appointed to his new role by the Brocton Village Board in November.
Regarding the recent water system improvement project in Water District 2, the Town of Portland amended compensation for CPL: Architecture, Engineering, and Planning at an increase of $28,000. The increase covers extensive inspection costs that exceeded what CPL expected. The Town agreed to increase compensation to provide the remaining grant funds not allocated elsewhere within the project. The amendment does not cost the Town any additional funds.
The next meeting of the Portland Town Board is Wednesday, Feb. 12.
