PARKERSBURG — Wayne’s Brooke Adkins went for game-highs of 19 points and 15 rebounds here Thursday night inside Rod Oldham Athletic Center as the fourth-ranked, Class AAA Pioneers dealt short-handed Parkersburg South a 62-43 setback.
The 4-14 Patriots of head coach Ed Davis, who take on Huntington at 5 p.m. today in the Snyder of Berlin/UTZ Snacks Shootout at W.Va. State, led 8-6 after one and trailed 25-18 at intermission as both teams shot 26% in the first half.
Farrah Yost, who knocked down four 3s and had a team-high 14 points, made one from distance early in the third and the Patriots only trailed 29-22 at the 6:12 mark following a Tae Richards charity stripe make, but the 14-4 Pioneers of head man Wade Williamson held a 51-32 edge entering the final eight minutes.
“I thought our kids did a really good job early on defensively,” said coach Davis, who got 12 points from Emilee Owens, seven from Macy Singer, six from Richards and a quartet by Regan Shockey as the hosts didn’t have the services of Lucie Cline. “I thought we contested shots. I thought we took away some stuff I think they wanted to do. What I saw on film I thought we did a good job of doing that and paying attention to what they were doing and adjusting.
“We competed on the boards early. We got outrebounded late and I think it kind of wore us down. We had that stretch in the middle of the second and we kind of rebounded and had a couple key baskets going into halftime and then they had the good third and we turned the ball over a little bit and just got in a hurry some, but they are a great team. That team could win the state tournament. I don’t know if they will, but they definitely could. They present a lot of problems for you.”

Jayce Sammons had 18 points, four assists and four steals for the Pioneers, who got 15 points and three steals from Mikayla Stacy along with eight markers, 11 caroms and a game-high six steals from Addie Adkins.
PSHS held a 13-8 cushion after Richards, who had a team-high nine rebounds, picked up one of her game-high five assists thanks to an Owens triple.
However, the Pioneers went on a 17-0 run that featured a trifecta apiece from Stacy, Adkins and Adkins.
“The first half we had the shots in the first quarter,” admitted coach Williamson, whose squad finished at 35.7% (25 of 70) compared to South’s 33.3% (14 of 42). “We played OK in the second quarter. We just didn’t play with as much intention as we should. We weren’t very intentional.
“We weren’t very locked in, I think. Maybe it’s the drive up here. Maybe it’s whatever. You know, no JV game. There’s no real crowd here for us. Maybe that all plays into it, but we can’t let that play into it. We did a little bit better job in the second quarter kind of taking care of business.”
Wayne will seek its seventh straight win on Tuesday when St. Albans invades.
“We got a big week next week. We got three games,” added coach Williamson. “We got a tough region and it’s very good. We beat Chapmanville by seven about a week ago and they have a nice team.
“Winfield has been playing really well here lately. My opinion we’ll have to play one of those two. Nitro is the other team and they’ll probably be the one seed where they beat us earlier in the year. We have to take care of our business at this point.”
PSHS, which lost the turnover (21-11) and rebounding (43-32) battles, made 8 of 25 from beyond the arc compared to the Pioneers’ 4 of 24 effort.
“We don’t have time to dwell on it,” coach Davis added of the loss. “We’ve got a key regional game tomorrow. We need to try and get this one tomorrow.”
