“For my whole life, I’ve watched the Olympics,” said Jimmy Cook, a visitor to the district on Friday.
It was big news as LA28, the organizing committee for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, announced OKC as a host city for two of their sporting events.
Fans are excited as canoe slalom competitions will be held at the rapids at Riversport OKC.
“I’ve been coming up here to Riversport for years now, and it’s very exciting to know that we are going to be hosting an Olympic event,” Cook said.
LA28 says the facility meets international competition standards.
A long work in progress, Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt said they’ve been working on this for six years.
While Riversport OKC did not talk about today’s announcement, last summer KOCO 5 talked with the facility’s executive director about reports of getting canoe slalom into town.
“We’re really fortunate in Oklahoma City to have this world-class venue. There’s not many of these in the world, and this is literally one of the best in the world, and as a result, we’ve been able to attract some major events here in the next few years,” said Michael Knopp.
One of those events coming up includes the International Canoe Federation’s 2026 World Cup, right here at Riversport OKC.

In a statement released today, the federation said their happy canoe slalom can help make Oklahoma a major Olympic city and that Riversport OKC is a top-tier host, and they’ll work closely with the city to successfully deliver the events.
LA28 said Oklahoma City was chosen as there isn’t a canoe slalom venue near Los Angeles, or in the western United States.
Some remember the investment made in Riversport OKC.
“I think the facilities are great. Obviously, the investment paid off. The committee wouldn’t do that if it wasn’t a good facility,” said district visitor David Frank on Friday.
