Northern continues its playoff run today when it hosts Surrattsville in the Class 1A state quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m.
The Huskies (13-2-1) were awarded the No. 2 seed in the state after defeating Allegany, 2-0, for the West Region I championship on Tuesday.
Surrattsville (6-5) beat Friendly, 5-1, for the South Region II crown, the school’s second in a row. The Hornets had to win just one game to advance to states, receiving a bye to the region championship game.
Northern is making its first state playoff appearance since 2007 when it fell 6-0 to Glenelg in the state semifinals.
The Huskies’ region title that year was not only the first in Northern history, but the first for any girls soccer team in Garrett or Allegany counties.
No school west of Sideling Hill has ever won a girls soccer state championship.
Northern’s Emma Hostetler leads the current iteration of the Huskies and the area with 38 goals. She also has eight assists for an area-high 84 points.
Ainsley McHenry-Sorber has scored 10 goals with a locally-high 24 assists, Abby Nelson has 15 goals and 10 assists and Mckenzie Upole has six goals and five assists.
Northern keeper Ada White has made 62 saves in 16 games, allowing just 10 goals. Northern averages 5.4 goals per game.
Surrattsville is making its second straight state quarterfinal appearance after falling to Perryville, 7-0, at the same stage a year ago.
Perryville went on to knock out Mountain Ridge with a 4-2 win in the state semifinals, ultimately falling in the Class 1A championship game to Havre de Grace, 1-0.
