11.57am 12th December 2024 - Sponsorship & Events
New indoor golf league TGL presented by SoFi is set to start its inaugural season on January 7, and Nicklaus Design has been tapped to be a part of this groundbreaking competition.
TGL combines the digital world of simulator golf with real chipping and putting. With six teams representing six different US cities, teams are comprised of top players on the PGA Tour. Teams will compete head-to-head each week, with unprecedented access to player’s reactions and conversations on the virtual course.
Nicklaus Senior Designer Chad Goetz collaborated with the TGL team to design six holes that Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Thomas and other leading PGA Tour stars will play in an eight-week showdown series set to be broadcast on ESPN.
Goetz and his team at Nicklaus Design came up with designs for six of the 18 holes, with other holes being created by Beau Welling Design and Piza Golf.
In a sneak preview for what’s in store, Nicklaus Design has unveiled details two of the six holes, which include a long par-three and a risk/reward par-four.
The latter, called Blue Bonnet at the Texas Hills Country Club, is a par-4 that offers multiple tee options to create a driveable 340-yard hole or a two-shot 450-yard hole. Playing the longer version, teams will need to decide how much of the canyon to try and bite off. Those who challenge the canyon edge will be rewarded with a shorter approach on a more receptive angle to this elevated green. Any slight miscalculation here will be very costly.
Standing on the tee of the short par-4, teams will again have to make a decision. A successful bold carry over the canyon will find a slope that feeds shots towards the green. More conservative play out to the left will still require precision to find the shallow fairway and a delicate pitch up the hill to the green over the front bunker.

The second hole, Cliffhanger, is a 251-yard par-3 that plays over an ocean cove to a green set back in the rocks and cypress trees of the Northern California coastline. Intended to play as a very long par-3, but it can also be played from various distances. As the hole shortens in length, the angles into the green increase in difficulty. No matter what tee is selected, strong ocean winds from the right will make it a challenge.
Speaking about his design process on Cliffhanger and how players should approach the hole, Goetz said: “This hole has many tees and can tip out over 250 yards, so players could be faced with a long tee shot on match night. The idea behind the design was players will have a hard wind blowing off their right shoulder in the virtual setting, which means they have to be careful controlling their shot into the green. There’s a little bit of a slope out to the right of the green that can be used to feed the ball toward the green, but it may not roll all the way onto the green.”
The first event of the TGL presented by SoFi season takes place at the Sofi Centre in West Palm Beach in Florida on January 7.
TGL has announced that Scott Van Pelt (host), Matt Barrie (play-by-play), and Marty Smith (reporter) will form the inaugural broadcast team for ESPN’s coverage.
Van Pelt will host the pre-match and intermission segments of the prime time matches from the SportsCenter studio in Washington; Barrie will call the action from the broadcast booth within SoFi Center, and Smith will be a roving reporter with access to the golfers, team ownership, and celebrities in attendance throughout matches.
For more details, visit tglgolf.com
Martin Slumbers leaves his position as Chief Executive of The R&A today [December 13] after serving the governing body for almost ten years.
Andrew Stanley, Group CEO and Founder of Golfbreaks, reviews the business for GBN and looks ahead to the prospects for 2025.
With over a month to go the event, stand bookings exceed the overall total achieved for the 2024 edition of the show, while the Continue to Learn education programme has achieved over 1,000 bookings at its earliest point ever.
GolfBusinessNews.com (GBN) is for the many thousands of people who work in the golf business all around the world.
We cover the full range of topics both on and off the course.
