Mike Blake, who served as sports editor for the Kern Valley Sun from June 2021 to 2024, has signed on to assume the sports editor role for the Taft Midway Driller.
Blake has spent decades writing sports, beginning with a four-year stint with the Los Angeles Herald Examiner in the 1980s. He moved on to serve as U.S. baseball correspondent for Sankei Baseball Monthly, Japan; and was the voice of American sports in Japan, speaking a column he wrote, for the English language teaching program: News/Sports USA. Blake also became Associate Editor of Vette magazine, Editor of Kit Car Illustrated magazine and Kit Car magazine before moving to Central Pennsylvania with Carlisle Events as senior automotive journalist car test driver, while appearing on WHP-21’s Saturday Morning News new car segments in Harrisburg, PA. Along the way, he wrote and had published four books on baseball, and has been a television and radio guest on more than 400 live broadcasts, including “The Larry King Show,” “Tom Snyder Show” and “Up Close with Roy Firestone.” Blake has had more than 2000 articles published in 90 magazines and newspapers and he has also written such syndicated columns as “Let’s Talk Sports” and “All About Cars.”
In California, Blake was a varsity letterman in baseball at Van Nuys High School (in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles), and played on the diamond for California State University, Northridge. Blake spent much time in Kern County growing up, with much of it spent fishing in Kern River and Kern County’s many lakes, streams and creeks .
Regarding his moving to the sports desk for the Taft Midway Driller, Blake said, “I am excited to be back reporting sports in Kern County and I am eager to start working with Taft Union High School’s coaches and AD to promote the programs and the great Wildcats kids who bring such pride to the community. It is the TUHS staff and local community sports program leaders who make solid coverage a reality, and it is local residents who share their news and thoughts that help us put the spotlight where it belongs … on the kids. It’s great to be here and I hope to do you proud.”
