A new spot in Benson will ‘SET the Bar’ for showcasing women’s sports in Omaha.
Co-Owner Molly Huyck said it’s difficult to find women’s sports playing on a tv in bars so she wanted to make it happen.
The new space will highlight women’s sports. It is expected to open by December. It will be located near 62nd and Maple streets.
The Omaha location will be the seventh women’s sports bar in the nation and the first in Nebraska.
Huyck said everyone is welcome in the bar.
“Having a place where everyone is comfortable to come watch women’s sports, I think it will bring people together,” she said.
Huyck was inspired after a visit to a women’s sports bar in Seattle.
However, she said the real reason she’s doing this is in her late sister’s memory.
“She traveled the world with us being our fan being there for us during sporting games,” Huyck said.
Kelsey was a teacher and loved kids. That’s why it’s important to Huyck the bar is family friendly.
“She’d be so proud, she’d be so proud,” Huyck said.
The bar will serve a variety of craft cocktails as well as non-alcoholic drinks with their menu full of yummy dishes.
She and her business partner Amy Hannesson want people to feel like they’re sitting in a living room or on a friend’s patio.
SET the Bar will have additional women’s restrooms and a lower, curved bar counter to accommodate women.
As women’s sports gain popularity, they feel the time is now.
“Omaha is the perfect community to celebrate women’s sports, and we are setting the bar high in bringing a new home for women’s sports to our city,” Huyck said. “Being one of the first few women’s sports bars in the U.S. is a special honor, and we know Omaha will show up and make us proud. I am thrilled for the launch.”
Council President Pete Festersen agrees.
“I think it’s fantastic for Omaha and fantastic for Benson this is exactly the kind of thing we’re trying to promote here,” he said.
The bar will host two pop up events before opening. One on September 10 at Barchen Beer Garden and another on September 22. More information will be posted on SET the bar’s social media.
