The Topgolf driving range complex near the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in downtown New Orleans cleared a key hurdle this week at the City Council that will allow the project to move forward.
Council members approved a land swap that will shift a portion of Melpomene Street 20 feet over to accommodate the driving range and allow construction to continue.
The Topgolf complex, which is the first project of the massive, $1 billion River District development, is expected to be open for business in 2025.
The approval on Thursday wasn’t without controversy, however. Nearby residents complained to council members that they were misled about what would occupy the land where Topgolf is being built.

There are currently two golf-entertainment venues rising in New Orleans. In addition to the Topgolf, a similar concept known as Five-O-Fore Golf, is being built on Howard Avenue at the site of the former Times-Picayune building.
That project, which faced delays over several years due to the pandemic and other issues, is also now under construction and is expected to open at the end of 2024.
