Nebraska softball looked to stay undefeated at Bowlin Stadium early in the 2025 campaign as they finished their weekend in front of a big home crowd in a doubleheader against Northern Iowa and South Dakota State.
The Huskers matched up with the Panthers in their first game of the Big Red Spring Fling where Nebraska defeated Northern Iowa by a score of 14-1.
Junior left-handed pitcher Hannah Camenzind got the start in the circle for the Huskers. Camenzind came into Sunday’s game with a record of 2-2 with a 2.69 ERA. For Northern Iowa, redshirt junior pitcher Anna Wischnowski got the start. Wischnowski came in with a 6-3 record and a 1.93 ERA in 54.1 innings pitched.
Northern Iowa opened the scoring in the first after a double by freshman second baseman Skylar Benesh to deep left field, followed by a two-out RBI single from freshman catcher Drew Hinrichs to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Camenzind bounced back in the second inning, striking out two in a 1-2-3 inning.
Junior designated player Olivia DiNardo recorded the first hit for the Huskers, and they would continue to threaten after Camenzind would help herself out by delivering an RBI on a fielder’s choice to tie it in the second.
Nebraska took the lead in the third after senior left fielder Abbie Squier sent one off the scoreboard in left field. The Huskers continued to swing it well, scoring three more in the inning to give Nebraska a 5-1 lead.
The Huskers extended the lead to 8-1 in the fourth after junior first baseman Jordy Bahl connected on a three-run home run to dead center field. Junior right fielder Kacie Hoffman also singled in the fourth and drove in sophomore third baseman Samantha Bland to make it 9-1.
Camenzind got out of a jam in the fifth without allowing a run and put the mercy rule into effect for a 9-1 Husker win. Camenzind threw a complete game, allowing just one earned run and getting her third win of the year.
Bahl got the start for the Huskers in game two, coming into the day with a 9-3 record and a 1.33 ERA. Freshman pitcher Amanda Vacanti started in the circle for the Jackrabbits. She came into the game with a 1-3 record and a 3.99 ERA.
South Dakota State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after a leadoff walk and a two-run home run from sophomore third baseman Abby Gentry.
The Huskers threatened in the third, getting runners in scoring position, however, Vacanti got out of the inning with no damage done.
The Huskers finally broke through and tied things up in the fifth after a DiNardo single scored Kuszak and Bahl. They would load the bases again in the inning, but Vacanti lined out to end the inning tied at 2-2.
Bahl kept things rolling, tossing five shutout innings since the first and retiring the Jackrabbits in the sixth with a 1-2-3 inning.
Nebraska took the 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth after a Bahl sacrifice fly brought Squier home.
Senior designated player Madi Conklin smacked a game-tying solo home run down to their final out to tie things up 3-3.
Vacanti held the Huskers scoreless in the seventh, resulting in free softball in Lincoln.
The Jackrabbits took the lead in the eighth after an error allowed sophomore Akayla Barnard to score and gave South Dakota State a 4-3 lead.
Squier delivered again for the Huskers in the bottom of the frame, launching a solo shot to tie things up heading into the ninth.
Junior first baseman Bella Bacon was the hero for the Huskers. She grounded out with _ on base, scoring Camenzind for a Nebraska walk-off win.
Bahl tossed a nine-inning complete game for her tenth win of the season.
The Huskers will be back in action next weekend to take on Ohio State in Columbus.
