LOYSBURG — Last season, the Northern Bedford girls basketball team won its PIAA Class 1A playoff opener over Ridgway, only to lose in the second round several days later. The Lady Panthers, who won their 2024-25 PIAA opener this past Saturday, 47-35, over Mount Calvary Christian, are working for a different outcome this Wednesday night against Delaware County Christian.
“It was on my goals sheet, it was on our girls’ goals sheet, too. Let’s make a little bit of more noise at states this year. We want to get a little bit farther than what we have been,” said NBC coach Jon Ewart following Saturday’s come-from-behind victory over the 23-6 Lady Chargers.
It was Mount Calvary that made the early noise, jumping out to a 5-0 lead on buckets by Kayley Barnes and the team’s leading scorer, Kylie Masters. NBC went on a 7-0 run then behind Addie Love, Bella Gable and Amberly Detterline. But when the quarter ended, the Lady Chargers were up 10-9 on a Clara Webb bucket.
“The Webb girl is a nice player. She does a lot of nice things for them,” Ewart said.
Mount Calvary turned it on a bit in the second quarter, extending its lead to 20-11 at the 3:54 mark, and it did so with its other standout player, Masters, on the bench with three fouls. Webb and Lilah Martin helped out with buckets to get the lead to nine points.
“The Masters girl is averaging well into the teens for them,” Ewart said. “She definitely seemed like their scorer, and I think we held her to under five.”
They did, but so did the foul trouble because the junior wound up with only four points.
“Our two guards (Masters & Webb) had two fouls each and Masters got her third then,” Lady Chargers coach Phil Ferrari said. “That changed the momentum a little bit.”
Northern was able to take a 22-21 halftime lead, thanks to points from Yeatts, Gable and Halle Baker down the stretch.
The Lady Panthers started to pull away in the third quarter behind Yeatts, Gable and Detterline. Masters then picked up her fourth foul at the 4:14 mark with NBC up 28-21 at that point.
The lead was extended to 37-27 on a Hannah Yeatts bucket in the final 1:41 of the third, but Kathleen Smucker nailed a shot with under a minute to play for the Lady Chargers, making it 37-29 after three.
“They pressed a little bit. We struggled with that. Then there was the foul trouble,” Ferrari said. “Their size and physicality wore on us, too.”
NBC’s defense wore on Mount Calvary in the fourth quarter, holding the Lady Chargers to no points until the 1:39 mark of the final frame. Ewart’s club was up 47-31 at that point.
“We missed a lot of peep shots early, and you just can’t do that at this level,” Ewart said. “The second half we started finishing those.”
Alyssa Yeatts, who led with 18 points, scored six in the fourth to go with four more from Baker. Northern only scored 10 in the final frame but Mount Calvary scored just six, and it came after the game had been decided.
“Alyssa played really well. When Alyssa gets closely guarded, she likes to attack the basket with authority and she did,” Ewart said. “Bella worked like crazy on the boards. She had a really great second half, probably her best half of basketball this season.”
Gable finished with nine points to go with eight from Baker. Webb totaled 13 for the Lady Chargers.
“We watched multiple games of theirs and they were equally balanced with their scoring. (No.) 12 (Yeatts) scored, (No.) 11 (Baker) was scoring and one coach told me about (No.) 32 (Detterline) was 4-for-9 from the 3-point line in a game,” Ferrari said. “We wore down, and they were getting open on their backscreens, and we knew that play, but they were executing and we were not communicating.”
Northern Bedford’s game with Delco on Wednesday will be at 6:30 p.m. at East Pennsboro High School in Enola.
