It already has been quite the year for the reigning OBSERVER/Post-Journal boys basketball Player of the Year Carson Swanson. The Westfield senior leads all of Section VI in scoring, has the Wolverines ranked No. 2 in the state among Class C schools and just this past week he individually surpassed 2,000 career points.
Swanson was 38 points away from reaching the career milestone and he wasted no time hitting the mark in his first of two games during the week. Playing Maple Grove in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 action he scored 34 points in the first half setting the table for a big moment in the second half.
That moment came about 5 1/2 minutes into the third quarter when Swanson slammed home a dunk for his 2,000th point.
He finished that game with a triple-double scoring 43 points, 10 assists and 12 steals, four rebounds and three blocks in the 87-40 win. But Swanson wasn’t done yet with another big league game against Chautauqua Lake.
Swanson finished his week with a 29-point, five assist, five steal and three block performance in a 69-53 Division 2 win.
The Westfield senior has not only made rumblings locally with his big week, but has captivated eyes nationally being nominated as one of 22 athletes for the Sports Illustrated National Boys Basketball Athlete of the Week.
