MEQUON — The city of Mequon’s original Ace Hardware location at 11001 N. Port Washington Road began the demolition process Tuesday.
The store, which first opened up shop in 1981, still remains present in the community after it relocated up the road last year and filled over half of the former Pick ’n Save at 11300 N. Port Washington Road that had been vacant for more than a decade. The other half will now be occupied by Planet Fitness.
“It was a destination more than a store,” Han Ace-Mequon Manager Jim Harts recalled about the previous building. “It was one of the great spots. You could always come in with your kids and grab some popcorn and shop away and just chit chat and let us help you with your projects. So yeah, people are going to miss the intimacy of that store.”
Independently owned by Perry, Barb, and Adam Hahn, the second-generation, family-owned and operated local Hahn Ace Hardware also currently serves the Hartford, Delafield, Mukwonago and Menomonee Falls areas.
