Prior to the 1983 Masters, all golfers had to use Augusta National caddies. Starting in 1983, most golfers used their regular Tour caddies, with only 22 of the 82 players in the field that year using Augusta National caddies. After that, the numbers continued to drop.
With nicknames like Stovepipe, Burnt Biscuits, Skillet, Skinny, and Marble Eye, the Black Augusta National Caddie Corps worked for presidents of the United States, captains of industry, and the greatest golfers in the world. Some of their real names were Carl Jackson, Willie Perteet, and Matthew Palmer — and they witnessed every great moment, both private and public, at Augusta National. beginning in the 1930s — from Gene Sarazen’s ‘shot heard around the world’ to Jack Nicklaus winning a record five of his six Masters.
The cover of the new book features Augusta caddie Jariah Beard, who helped Fuzzy Zoeller become only the third golfer to win the Masters at their first attempt in 1979. Beard is one of the many Augusta National caddies who have died since the book was first published 20 years ago.
Willie Stokes, who shares the caddie record for most victories in the Masters with Willie Peterson at five, died in 2006. Carl Jackson, now aged 77, is the most famous of the original Augusta National caddies, with a record 54 appearances in the Masters. He was on the bag for Ben Crenshaw’s wins in 1984 and 1995, and stayed with him for 39 years. The others who carried winning bags who are still alive are Marion Herrington (Seve Ballesteros, 1980) and Ben Bussey (Craig Stadler, 1982), as is Tommy Bennett, who caddied for Tiger Woods in his Masters debut as an amateur in 1995.

‘The Legendary Caddies of Augusta National – Inside Stories from Golf’s Greatest Stage’
is available to by on Amazon, priced at $19.95 (£13.57)
Trailblazing American golfer and Honorary University of St Andrews graduate Dr Renee Powell returned to the Home of Golf this week.
England Golf has been named one of six finalists in two categories at the FEVO Sport Industry Awards, with the national governing body nominated for Sport Organisation of the Year and the Wellness at Work award.
Pacesetter Technology, a leading innovator in mobile technology for private clubs, has announced a strategic partnership with 59club, the industry’s customer service management specialist.
GolfBusinessNews.com (GBN) is for the many thousands of people who work in the golf business all around the world.
We cover the full range of topics both on and off the course.
