Washoe County is a critical swing county in the United States. As a result, we will see more prominent political figures visiting this area.
On Saturday, Chasten Buttigieg, the husband of U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, visited Northern Nevada. His first stop was at Our Center, a non-profit organization that provides access to advocacy, educational programs, services, and resources to the LGBTQ community in Northern Nevada.
Chasten Buttigieg is an LGBTQ advocate and the author of “I Have Something to Tell You: A Memoir”
During his visit, Buttigieg met with the director and personnel to discuss ways to strengthen their services. He is aware of the difficulties faced by the LGBTQ community in America, having personally experienced them.
“How can we find ways to make sure you’re supporting another center like Big Brothers Big Sisters; organizations where you can take something else,” he said.
He is aware of the difficulties faced by the LGBTQ community in America, having personally experienced them. As a teenager, he came out of the closet and ran away from his hometown in Northern Michigan to avoid bringing shame to his parents, who were small business owners.
“When I was that scared, confused teenager sleeping in the back of my car, I did not see a future for myself. I never thought that I would know love, family, or community, so sometimes I pinch myself that I got to grow up to be this person, and I just think about how best I can use that platform and this opportunity to keep lifting other people up,” said author and advocate Chasten Buttigieg.
Chasten Buttigieg then spoke at the Washoe County Democrats convention at Hug High School in Sparks. He stumped for Biden-Harris and down-ticket Democrats, including Senator Jacky Rosen.
“Politics is the thing that is around our kitchen table; it’s in our living rooms, it’s in our mailboxes, it’s us kissing our kids goodnight, thankful that we have a roof over our head. There’s clean, safe drinking water coming out of the tap and filling up the bathtub for tubby time. You know about tubby time?” he said to the laughing audience.
He discussed top Democratic priorities like building the middle class, protecting women’s right to abortion, capping high costs on insulin, and touting the Biden administration’s work on the economy.
“Families are beginning to feel the benefits of the President’s landmark bipartisan infrastructure investments, we’re modernizing, roads, trains, public transportation, and more,” said Buttigieg.
We will continue to update this article with more information.
