Mavericks G Luka Doncic today is publicly launching the Luka Doncic Foundation with a campaign to “revitalize and grow youth sports worldwide,” according to Mike Curtis of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. Doncic is “spearheading the cause” with a financial pledge of over $2.5M. Doncic established the 501(c)3 nonprofit in July 2021 and has “made joy the fundamental principle.” Doncic’s Chief Brand Officer and business manager Lara Beth Seager serves as the foundation’s exec dir. The foundation commissioned a report titled “Inside Youth Basketball,” created through a partnership with Nonfiction Research. It “offers solutions to make basketball more accessible and enjoyable for children.” Curtis notes the goal of the foundation’s “Total Hoops Approach” is to “provide a blueprint for change by implementing pilot programs around the world through eight core principles: Development with Purpose, Team-First Mentality, Trained and Incentivized Coaches, Program Continuity, Freedom to Play, Smart Development Guidelines, Embracing Mess and Joy, and Life Beyond Basketball.” Doncic’s foundation will work alongside the NBA, FIBA, the Basketball Federation of Slovenia, Jordan Brand, Gatorade and “other entities in sports, youth development, wellness and education.” A “star-studded group” will join the foundation’s board, the Youth Sports Leadership Council. Members include Doncic’s agent, Bill Duffy; Warriors G Stephen Curry; Liberty G Sabrina Ionescu; Hawks assistant coach Igor Kokoskov; and Basketball HOFers Pau Gasol, Tracy McGrady and Steve Nash (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 12/19).
