Long Island Community Hospital performs 1,000th robotic surgery

Ahead of a merger with NYU Langone Health, Patchogue-based Long Island Community Hospital (LICH) performed its 1,000th robotic surgery at the hospital. The surgery was conducted as the hospital prepares to merge with NYU Langone Health in 2025.
“Since its affiliation with NYU Langone, our team at Long Island Community Hospital has had one goal: pursuing excellence by improving the quality of care, the patient experience, and the range of specialties that we offer here in Suffolk County,” Marc Adler, senior vice president and chief of hospital operations, said in a news release about the milestone.
“The addition of robotic surgery has already had a great impact on the community, benefiting more than 1,000 patients who might have otherwise had to travel far from home for medical procedures they can now receive right here,” Adler added.
The hospital noted the benefits of robotic surgeries. For patients, those benefits include smaller incisions, less pain and discomfort, faster recovery times and shorter hospital stays. Among the robotic surgeries performed at the hospital are hernia, bariatric, gynecological and oncology-related surgeries. LICH surgeons also perform emergency general surgery robotically.
The hospital, in the last three years, has recruited more than 100 new physicians, expanding the types of primary and specialty care such as neurology, gastroenterology, primary care, orthopedics, pulmonology, urology, women’s health as well as colorectal, breast, vascular and cancer surgery. The hospital has added new services, including occupational therapy, gynecologic oncology and acupuncture.
In 2022, NYU Langone became the active parent of LICH, creating a clinically integrated healthcare network between the two organizations. Although LICH is still a separate corporation, its affiliation with NYU Langone allows it to draw on the system’s resources and expertise.
LICH has also adopted NYU Langone’s version of Epic, a comprehensive electronic health record system that ensures seamless integration and communication across the hospital and NYU Langone’s six other hospitals and over 300 ambulatory locations in the New York City region, Long Island and Florida.
Additionally, an NYU Langone ambulatory surgery center will open in fall 2025 at the site of the former Burlington Coat Factory building on East Main Street, near the Patchogue hospital. The facility will include six operating rooms and four procedure rooms. NYU Langone also maintains an existing ambulatory location at 100 Hospital Road in Patchogue.
