MAR 21.01.2025
There were several significant results in the LALIGA EA SPORTS title race this past week, as Real Madrid were the only side in the top three to secure victory. That puts them top of the table, and the details are outlined below, along with the week’s other headlines.
Real Madrid go top of LALIGA EA SPORTS
There is a new leader in LALIGA EA SPORTS, as Real Madrid have climbed into first place thanks to their 4-1 victory over UD Las Palmas and thanks to Atlético de Madrid’s 1-0 defeat at CD Leganés. Los Blancos now boast a two-point lead over their city rivals, making the upcoming ELDERBI DE MADRID in Matchday 23 all the more fascinating.
Atlético de Madrid’s winning run ends at 15
After several weeks of winning, Atlético de Madrid finally dropped points again and they did so away at capital city neighbours CD Leganés. Despite hitting the woodwork multiple times and missing a penalty, Atleti lost 1-0 to Los Pepineros, whose goal was scored by Matija Nastasić, to mean their club record winning run stops at 15 victories in a row.
Getafe CF earn another positive result against FC Barcelona at the Coliseum
For the fifth season in a row, Getafe CF have earned a positive result at home against FC Barcelona. The two teams met at the Coliseum again on Saturday night and it finished as a 1-1 draw, after goals from Jules Koundé and Mauro Arambarri. That means Barça’s past five results away at Los Azulones have been four draws and one defeat.
Kike García’s hat-trick earns Coudet his first win
Deportivo Alavés have secured their first victory since the arrival of new coach Eduardo Coudet, as they defeated Real Betis 3-1 on the road with all three goals scored by veteran striker Kike García. The 35-year-old conjured up a perfect hat-trick, scoring one with his right foot, one with his left foot and one with his head.
Athletic Club strengthen their grip on fourth place
Athletic Club achieved a 2-1 victory away at RC Celta on Sunday, courtesy of goals from Álex Berenguer and Dani Vivian, earning three more points in their quest to secure Champions League football. They now hold a nine-point lead over fifth-placed Villarreal CF and sixth-placed RCD Mallorca, who take on each other on Monday night.
Valencia CF move off the bottom of the table
Valencia CF have won their first LALIGA EA SPORTS game under new coach Carlos Corberán, overcoming Real Sociedad 1-0 on Sunday night. Hugo Duro scored the only goal of the game, earning Los Che a result which moves them off the bottom of the table.
RCD Espanyol win a huge relegation six-pointer
There was another huge game in the relegation battle in Matchday 20, as RCD Espanyol and Real Valladolid faced off. The Catalan side won 2-1 thanks to strikes from Javi Puado and Roberto Fernández, with Real Valladolid now rock bottom of the table.
Max Aarons joins Valencia CF
Valencia CF made a signing this past week, bringing in Max Aarons on loan from Bournemouth. The 25-year-old full-back has become the first English player in Valencia CF’s history, and he’ll hope to help Los Che escape the relegation zone by the end of the season.
Martin Valjent is staying at RCD Mallorca
Martin Valjent has been at RCD Mallorca since 2018 and he is staying for a few years more. The 29-year-old centre-back put pen to paper on a new deal with the island club this past week, one which will run to 2029.
The final eight of the Copa del Rey is decided
The Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey took place this past week, so the competition is down to the final eight clubs. These are: Atlético de Madrid, CA Osasuna, CD Leganés, FC Barcelona, Getafe CF, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Valencia CF. The quarter-final draw will take place this Monday, January 20th.
