Maliyah Lansang shoots over a Maize South defender in the 64-57 win over Maize South on Dec. 20.
The Lady Panthers ended the 2024 portion of the schedule with a key 64-57 win over Maize South on Dec. 20. Derby (3-1, 2-0 in AVCTL-I) bounced back from a first half that was slow for their high-energy standards. It wasn’t until the second half that the Panthers truly took a grasp on the game.
It was a competitive first half between two of the top contenders for the AVCTL-I crown. The Lady Mavericks led for about 30 seconds in the game by taking a 12-10 lead with 3:10 left in the opening quarter. The Lady Panthers fought back and regained the lead but opened the door for some second-half momentum after Maize South hit a basket at the first-half buzzer to make it a 28-27 Derby lead. The Lady Panthers had just nine points in the second quarter.
Out of the break, the Lady Panthers took a quick 7-0 run and never looked back in a 20-point third quarter. The reinvigorated energy in the second half helped the Panthers take control of the boards and run the floor for easy baskets in transition.
“I feel like out of the second, it amped it up because we knew it was close,” Karlie Demel said. “We needed to go out there with way more energy and we came out and did that.”
Aysia Fox and Macayla Askew each scored 17 points to lead the Panthers. Karlie Demel added an 11-point effort. Maize South had four players in double-digits, led by a 17-point game by Ali Singhateh.
The Lady Panthers enter the break with a 3-1 record and with some momentum after a competitive opening four games. Derby will use the break to improve conditioning and communication on the floor.
The young roster has shown the ability to adapt to different defensive schemes. Derby started the first few games of the year, utilizing its full court pressure, but switched it to a man-to-man half court defense. The coaching staff has been proud of the team’s ability to adjust, which provides more intensive defensive options going forward.
“We are a young team if you really think about it,” head coach Bryan Chadwick said. “For us to play the first games with the press and then adapt makes us so much better. There is more that we want to add for this group, and they are doing a phenomenal job.”
Derby will host Salina South to kickoff the post-holiday break on Jan. 3.
