Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has advised Vice President Kamala Harris to “step away” from politics before she pursues future races, suggesting she find a topic that she cares about.
Harris’s next steps in her political career are currently unknown, with speculation ranging from a gubernatorial run in California for 2026 to another presidential run in 2028. In assessing this dilemma, McCarthy argued that Harris would not have been the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee had it undergone a proper primary election, adding that her loss has now brought about “a tremendous amount of debt” to her party.
HARRIS FANS PONDER TRUMP-LIKE COMEBACK FOR SCUFFLING DEMOCRAT
“The party is trying to find a new direction; that doesn’t mean that they want you to be the leader,” McCarthy said on Fox News’s America’s Newsroom. “If she came back to California, she would not win the race for governor. So she’s got to rethink — she’s young enough — and retool, but she’s never really done well in long campaign, and I don’t know quite what that answer is.”
As such, McCarthy argued that the vice president’s next step should be to “step away for a little bit” and instead seek a rebrand on “issues,” arguing that this could be a new way to portray herself going forward.
Last month, Trump ally and Fox News contributor Caitlyn Jenner hinted at a possible 2026 gubernatorial run in California, suggesting, “I would destroy” Harris if the vice president were the Democratic nominee.
McCarthy was also asked about the massive amount of commutations that President Joe Biden is making before leaving the White House next month, suggesting the president wants to “set a record” in granting presidential pardons without caring “who’s in there.” He specifically criticized Biden’s pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, noting that the president’s pardon lied about his son failing to pay taxes due to his drug addiction.

“But in the trial, and you look at the judge itself, Hunter Biden’s defense was ‘no, he was clean during that time,’” McCarthy said. “‘He didn’t want to pay his taxes because he didn’t want to change his lifestyle.’ So there’s a lie after a lie.”
The possibility of Biden granting preemptive pardons to members of the Jan. 6 committee was addressed by several members of Congress over the weekend, with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) suggesting that the president should “very seriously” consider issuing these pardons. Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA), meanwhile, has cautioned that these pardons could create “a precedent we don’t want to set” and said he communicated these concerns to the Biden administration “both publicly and privately.”
