Iowa State senior Curtis Jones and Drake junior Bennett Stirtz have been named honorable mention All-American by The Associated Press, making it consecutive years both schools have been represented on the prestigious squad.
Jones follows the footsteps of teammate Tamin Lipsey, who was an honorable mention selection last year, while Stirtz is Drake’s second-straight honoree after former Bulldog Tucker DeVries was named honorable mention a year ago.
Jones and Lipsey represent Iowa State’s first back-to-back All-Americans since Georges Niang was a two-time selection, earning third-team honors in 2015 and second-team selection in 2016.
The Big 12 Conference’s Sixth Man of the Year and all-Big 12 first-teamer, Jones leads the Cyclones in scoring with 17.3 points per game while connecting on 83 3-pointers this season. He’s averaging 3.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.0 steals per game off the bench.
Stirtz, who won the Missouri Valley Conference’s Larry Bird Award as Player of the Year, leads Drake in scoring (19.1), assists (5.7) and steals (2.2). He helped the Bulldogs reach their third-straight NCAA Tournament after sweeping the regular-season and MVC tournament titles.
Drake, a No. 11 seed, will face No. 6 Missouri in its NCAA Tournament opener on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. in Wichita, Kan.
The 15th-ranked Cyclones received a No. 3 seed and will meet No. 14 Lipscomb on Friday at 12:30 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wis.
