NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.- Johnson & Johnson (J&J) says it will expand in the United States in a big way.
On Friday, the healthcare and med-tech giant announced investments of more than $55 billion over the next four years in manufacturing, research and development, and technology.
The expansion includes four new U.S. manufacturing facilities; J&J broke ground on one of those facilities on Friday in Wilson, North Carolina, which will manufacture “next-generation medicines for people living with cancer, immune-mediated and neurological diseases in America and around the world,” the company said, in a news release.
Johnson & Johnson didn’t reveal the location of the other three manufacturing sites. It did say it also would expand several existing sites across its medicine and med-tech businesses that will create high-paying, high-technology jobs.
J&J, which is headquartered in New Brunswick, New Jersey, said the overall $55 billion in investments represents a 25% increase compared to the previous four years.
Johnson & Johnson is the second major pharmaceutical company in recent weeks to announce a boost in domestic manufacturing. Late last month, Eli Lilly, based in Indiana, said it would invest at least $27 billion to build four new manufacturing sites in the U.S.
President Trump has made it a priority to increase manufacturing in the U.S. He has raised the possibility of extending tariffs to the pharmaceutical industry.
