IAW celebrates 50 years of safe drinking water
Indiana American Water, a subsidiary of American Water, the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., is proud to join the water industry in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act, the landmark law that has safeguarded public health by protecting drinking water quality since its passage on December 1974.
Indiana American Water recognizes the Safe Drinking Water Act’s 50-year impact on water quality and emphasizes the need for continued investment to address emerging challenges in water safety and quality.
They are expected to invest over $200 million annually and nearly $1.6 billion over the next 5-6 years in infrastructure repairs and replacement and system resiliency. This investment aligns with the spirit of the Safe Drinking Water Act and its mission to safeguard public health for American Water customers and communities across the nation.
Duke Energy upgrades more than 700 Franklin streetlights
Duke Energy has converted more than 700 streetlights across the city of Franklin to LEDs (light-emitting diodes). The new, energy-efficient lights will replace decades-old light fixtures, resulting in significant energy and cost savings for the city.
“The installation of smart street lighting is better for the environment, better for the city’s bottom line, better for the safety of our streets, and ultimately better for the overall quality of life for those who call Franklin home,” Steve Barnett, mayor of Franklin, said in a statement. “We appreciate Duke Energy’s partnership on this vital initiative.”
The project is expected to reduce the city of Franklin’s streetlight energy expenses by nearly 27%, resulting in an annual cost savings of approximately $20,000.
The new LED streetlights emit a noticeably clearer, brighter light than the existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights, which produce a dim, amber-orange hue. LED lights have a much longer lifespan, are safer for traffic, and have lower maintenance costs than HPS lights.
