Kroger celebrates investment in Johnson County
Kroger celebrated another multi-million-dollar investment in Indiana. A ribbon-cutting marked the ceremonial completion of a $3.6 million project to enhance the store at 5961 N. State Road 135, Greenwood.
“This investment represents our commitment to be outstanding in price, selection and service for our customers in Johnson County,” said Kroger division president Colleen Juergensen. “Today’s celebration is part of a year-long statewide plan to elevate the customer experience in our stores, making sure they’re places where Hoosiers love to shop and Kroger associates love to work. And with the holiday season upon us, the timing couldn’t be better. We are grateful to everyone who chooses Kroger for the ingredients of great holiday memories.”
Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers said this celebration comes at “an exciting time for the city of Greenwood. They’ve remodeled this store” [as] “this whole area is being remodeled.” Myers said, “We’re adding so many more houses. We’re going to have more people coming in here. This is the perfect time” for Kroger’s investment. “We’re excited to have Kroger here,” he said. “We want to see you continue to grow and whatever we can do to help, we’re always here for you.”
The ribbon-cutting also served as the setting to celebrate $10,000 in hunger relief donations by Kroger and Kroger’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Foundation. The foundation provided $8,000 to The Society of St. Andrew which gathers unharvested produce from farm fields.
Kroger also presented $1,000 to the Interchurch Food Pantry of Johnson County and $1,000 to the Weekend Food Bag Program of Grace Assembly Church in New Whiteland.
Kroger’s contributions represent the latest elements of the grocer’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste plan, its commitment to eliminate hunger in the communities Kroger serves.
The ribbon-cutting also provided an opportunity to celebrate a personal achievement. Juergensen honored the associate with the longest tenure on the store team. Cashier Barbara Lydy joined Kroger when “Return of the Jedi” was the top movie, “Dallas” was one of the top shows on TV, and Michael Jackson made “Billie Jean” one of the year’s top songs. Lydy started in May 1983, 41 years ago.

Franciscan Health achieves Platinum Level status
Franciscan Health recently was recognized for achieving Quit Now Indiana Champion Platinum Level status for smoking cessation. The recognition encompasses all of the Franciscan hospitals in Indiana: Carmel, Crawfordsville, Crown Point, Dyer, Indianapolis, Lafayette, Michigan City, Mooresville, Munster, Orthopedic Hospital (Carmel) and Rensselaer.
A Quit Now Indiana Champion is a health system, medical provider or employer that values and promotes Quit Now Indiana Tobacco Treatment Services. Franciscan is one of only four health systems in Indiana to achieve Quit Now Indiana Champion Platinum Level status.
Quit Now Indiana Champions are leading the way in helping Hoosiers end their tobacco use and begin recovery. The levels are designated by the health system’s number of referrals to Quit Now Indiana, as well as having 100% tobacco-free grounds policy that protects all from secondhand smoke, promotes a healthy environment and a tobacco treatment policy or workflow.
“Everyone deserves the opportunity to be as healthy as possible,” said Irene Boone Phillips, program coordinator for Tobacco Prevention & Cessation Coalition at Franciscan Health. “Tobacco products are the only consumer products on the market that cause disease and death when used as intended. Receiving the Quit Now Indiana Platinum status affirms Franciscan Health’s commitment to saving lives and helping the communities we serve recover from nicotine addiction.”
