BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) -Joe Manchin is no stranger to politics. From delegate and state senator, to secretary of state, to governor, to his final position of senior U.S. senator from West Virginia .. The 77 year old has done just about all there is to do in government. So after 42 years, why call it quits now?
“When you get to Washington you have to go far right or far left-that’s what I think has filed up. We have to get back to common sense more centrist type policies that are able to last for a period of time,” said Sen. Joe Manchin // (D) West Virginia.
Manchin has been a vocal critic of much of president Biden’s and the democratic party’s agenda, which ultimately culminated in him leaving the party back in may. When Manchin was elected governor in 2004, much of the state government and many West Virginian’s were registered democrats. But now, Just 20 years later, The state has completely swung the other way. Here’s why Manchin thinks that is.
“It got to the point that the democrat elites in Washington thought they were going to tell Everyone how to live their life. Then they put more attention on people who wrent working, who were able bodied and could work, they didn’t work- then the people who were getting up everyday and struggling.”
Even as Manchin approaches the end of his time in congress, he says he’s there’s still more work to be done.
“The bottom line is, only way your going to bring them back to the middle is showing them that you can win from the middle. showing them an independent can win and have the the strength and support behind them.” said Manchin.
