AUGUSTA — Candidates interested in running for a Bangor-area Maine House of Representatives seat have until Jan. 10 to submit their names to the Secretary of State’s Office.
The House District 24 seat covers part of Bangor, part of Brewer, part of Orono and all of Veazie.
The seat is open because Democrat Joe Perry, who was reelected to the post in November, was chosen by the Maine Legislature in December to serve as state treasurer.
State political parties will now caucus to choose nominees. Nonparty candidates must get 50-80 signatures from registered voters in House District 24 to get on the ballot, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.
The winner will serve two years in the 132nd Maine Legislature.
With the open slot, Democrats control 75 seats, Republicans have 73 seats and independents control two seats. The legislative session resumes Jan. 8.
The special election is set for Feb. 25.
